Honestly. Is anyone really surprised that it's been revealed that NYC Yellow Cab drivers are nothing but->?
Crooks who ripped off Passengers? I'm not surprised at all. They tried that once with me & that was enough for me to never take a Yellow Cab again even if it meant walking 100 blocks before i ever take a Yellow Cab. New Yorkers should boycott using Yellow Cabs but i know that will never happen.->
NYC Taxis Overcharged Passengers $8.3 Million, New York City Says
NEW YORK — Thousands of New York City taxi drivers overcharged passengers by more than $8.3 million over the past two years by setting their meters at a rate that was supposed to be used for trips to the suburbs, the Taxi and Limousine Commission said Friday.
At least 1.8 million trips were wrongly charged at the suburban rate, which is double the rate within city limits, the commission said.
The city has about 48,300 licensed cabbies, and data shows that 35,558 have illegally charged a rider at least once, the city said. A smaller group of drivers is responsible for the majority of overcharged trips – 3,000 cabbies were found to have doubled the meter rate more than 100 times.
The commission has referred its findings to the Department of Investigation.
"Some of these people could face serious charges," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "Now, how we would ever recoup the money and get it back to the individual payers, no, but we can stop the practice and we can make sure there's penalties."

It's the same around the world and around the country.
I was ripped off in Orlando, where for a"flat rate" of $41, I ended up paying $49.
Per the driver I had to pay $5 for the tolls-totally untrue as I found out from the cab company.
I was told to file a complaint, but who has the time for that?
I could give many more examples of tricky cab drivers but I guess you get the point.
Incidentally, while in NY, I never had a bad experience w a cab driver, not that it means anything.
My husband who worked as a cabbie in his younger days while looking for a job, was tricked by his passengers a few times.
And my FIL who was a cab driver for many years can tell you endless stories of the dangerous, unethical, rude, tricky and plain stupid passengers he drove through the years
So, it goes both ways

I read the news story. Based on the millions of cab rides a year, it's less than 1 percent of all cab rides. Those stats come from an organization that represents cab drivers, but you cannot say all cab drivers are dishonest because only some are. Furthermore, there is going to be a new device installed that will tell riders if they are being charged the suburban or city rates. I've never had a problem.

No, I've never been to New York but it doesn't surprise me at all. People take advantage of others all the time, it stinks. The fact that cab drivers are doing it seems to fit stereotypes well. I mean, where I live you have to call a cab to come and get you (they don't drive the streets) and anywhere in town is $4.50-so they can't rip you off. But I've heard the long route to locations, scamming tourists and being rude to passengers from people who've been in big cities before. So, the fact that they are ripping people off doesn't surprise me at all. Especially in a big city like New York.

Seems excellent that New York has a commission that researched this and came up with a value of rip-off .
This type of rip off sadly happens across the world , I would hate to know what the figure is for , say , the cab drivers of Bangkok or Sydney .
Cab drivers can rip you off the world over .

It used to be the mandatory ride around Central Park to get the fare up or the refusal by the cabbie at JFK to take you to a location in Queens or Brooklyn or by a cab driver in Manhattan to go to Queens or Brooklyn other than to JFK. Some are honest, some are funny, many are strange and as always, quite a few are crooked.

The city is to blame for having such a stupid system open to abuse. There is only a single rate in London irrespective of whether the trip is wholly within Central London or ventures out into the suburbs. Fares depend on distance alone. There is no logical reason for having the two rates.

That doesnt surprise me that Yellow Cab Company did that and hopefully the state of New York does bring them on charges for doing it

I believe that happens. Sometimes you have to take a cab. I thought Yellow Cab had the best reputation. I'd hate to see what the other cab companies charge like. I wish you luck Scooter.
