Why does my Husky likes to suntan?

I live in a tropical island and I know this is not the environment for Huskies but I keep mine in A/C all day and I take her out very early in the morning and in the afternoon but never take her out during the day where the sun is too strong. The strange thing is that she loves the sun! Everyday she goes to the balcony and lay there for hours then come inside likes she just run a mile to drink a little bit of water and then goes back to the balcony. She only comes to the house when the sun rays have leave the balcony.

Can someone explain this? I don't think she's sick since she always do this and I take really good care of her (vitamins, quality food, heart worm pills, front line for fleas, always have cold water available, etc).

it is a way for your dog to remove odor from her coat. My first husky also loved to lay in the sun, i lived in florida at the time. one of my clients was a dog trainer and handler in the show ring. i had asked her about this. do not worry about it, it is normal.

This must be a natural Husky behaviour because my husband's parents have a Border Collie-Husky cross from a shelter who does this too! They adopted him when he was 6 months old and now he is almost 5 years old. We live in Canada and he LOVES the snow, but in the summer, he will lie in the sun for HOURS on the back deck. On the weekend he will even follow the sun around the back yard (it's shady because they have a few big trees) looking for where it is hottest throughout the day.

I'm sorry I can't tell you WHY they do this, but Husky's must like extreme weather, both hot and cold.

But rest assured it can't be too dangerous, because their dog has been doing this for 5 years now and he's perfectly healthy. They also have a Flat Coat retriever that HATES the sun. She always stays inside in the A/C or the covered sun porch. But their Husky cross just loves running laps around their big backyard and then napping for hours in the sunshine.

I guess its just like when people sunbathe! She must love the feel of the sun on her fur, or the warmth or something. My dog does this in the summer. I would suggest putting a water dish out on the balcony for her, and ensure to keep it filled with cold fresh water. This way she doesnt have to keep coming in to the house for a drink, as this may put her off keeping hydrated if she wants to stay outside. Don't worry about her though, she would come back in if she was too hot or something.

Good for you for being a responsible owner!

Yes, she's perfectly fine. My Bernese Mountain Dog did the same for quite sometime, 'til we moved. Sometimes dogs just love heat and being warm every once in a while.

The warmth feels good. My GSD did the same thing.

I'd guess its because she loves to relax, be warm or just a bit lazy sometimes. Don't worry about her. She sounds fine.
