What is causing my internet drop out problems?
Within the last couple of months, we have been experiencing internet drop out problems. We have Quest DSL. We have a new modem, have checked the router by plugging one of our ethernet cables directly into the modem, bypassing the router, still problem. We have replaced the phone line from the jack all the way to the outside box. We have had repairmen come out twice, once with a new modem, the other said the wire was shorting out, which caused us to run the wire directly into the box, as he said to do. Two days after doing this, is starting going on and off again. I am out of ideas, anyone have a solution?

I've had similar problems since 2005
For one thing in my area AT & T refuses to update the main box where the lines come in so that sometimes when it rains i lose connection. They have to come out and do something in the box.
But they won't put a new box in.
Secondly sometimes they've lowered my bandwidth so that when more than one computer is on
in my house the connection just stops.
Thirdly I've changed modems 6 times in the last 5 years and that has helped sometimes.
Finally I had Time Warner install cable. No TV just internet service. They ran cable from the telephone
pole all the way to my computer. They charged 20 bucks for the modem and 40 bucks a month for what is supposed to be up to 10 Mega bytes bandwidth. Sometimes I get as much as 10, but usually the speed is closer to 6 or 7 mega bytes. Any way I'm keeping my AT & T for a while
(paying 25 bucks a month) to see how the cable goes. My AT&T bandwidth is 1.5 and they say in
my area they cannot give me anymore than that. Even if i go with UVerse. So I hope this helps in
some way.
I went to Best Buy and got a Netgear Router that supposedly handles upto 300 megabytes, the top
of the line and connected to the modem and put it in the middle of the house and now we have
four computer running off that Netgear and it seems to be doing the job. One connected with ether
net cable and the other three connected wireless. so i'm paying 60 bucks a month for internet service but i have back up in case one goes down. Its a lot to pay, but i'll pay it for 2 or 3 months
until I'm sure of the cable service.

Have Quest change the split bank and the cable pair.
