Has anyone had a debt relief order?

A friend of mine has been to the CAB and been told she is eligible for a debt relief order (DRO)

she is going to fill the forms in in the next few weeks to be sent off

She is thinking about maxing her catalogue account out and getting a few things that she can not afford to buy, like a TV and new mattress.

I have told her i don't think it is a good idea because when they send the papers off they may check when she last ordered something, can they do that or do they just look at the overall debt?

Update:

Thanks Jennifer, thats what i thought, it is a HUGE risk because if it is declined for that simple fact it is daft and the debt will still be there!

please advise her not to do this!!! they will want to check all statements and that means recent purchases too.

if she has gone and maxed out her catalogue just before applying then the OR (official receiver) will most likely see this as an attempt to get something for nothing rather than someone being serious about clearing debts.

if they conclude that she deliberately spent money she couldn't afford because she is applying for a DRO then they can decline to help her, leaving her in a worse situation than she is now.

they don't just hand out these orders without going through all ingoings/outgoings and other purchases.

her best bet is if she really needs these things she should save using what money she will have left when she doesn't need to pay her debts anymore (if she gets the DRO), or if they are not essential needs then perhaps she should be more sensible and just not get them.
