What is a good vacation close to home (NW Georgia)?

My wife and I (and our 2 year old) want to take a vacation no more than 6-8 hours drive.

We live in Northwest Georgia... Do you have any suggestions?

Notes: Most people suggest Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, but we have been there several times already. We went to Gulf Shores last year... is there anything else you can think of?

Maybe a lake house area or something out of the ordinary...

Consider camping some where along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can also check out Chattanooga, TN. The Tennessee aquarium is close. Also Cloudland Canyon State Park & the Chickamauga Battlefield for wide open spaces.

One of my favorite vacations was in Pawley's Island, SC. There's a company called Litchfield that has a variety of options: condos on the beach, hotels, apartments on the golf course. And not too expensive! I enrolled my school-aged daughter in their camp for a few hours a day, so I had time to relax. You can rent bicycles, hit the pool, or the beach - drive into Myrtle Beach (which is a lot more commercial.) It was fun.

Another option is to spend a couple of days in a few places. One summer my husband and I drove to New Orleans, Biloxi and Perdido Beach - and it was a ton of fun.

I know from experience that it's difficult to find fun things to do with a two year old. My best thing when my daughter was a toddler was to visit friends and family, generally in NYC. I'd have fun catching up with people and seeing the sites; my daughter enjoyed the attention, and if she was tired, she'd sleep in her stroller.

    Take a cruise.

They aren't very expensive if you plan ahead and the ports of Jacksonville and Port Canaveral FLA aren't that far away.

    Try Boomers in Marietta.
