Why was my credit card application denied...AGAIN?

I am beyond pissed off. I recently applied for a Discover card only to be turned down. I am a 35 year old college grad, I have owned my home for 3 years, the mortgage is current and in good standing, I have a personal loan that is current and also in good standing as is the monthly monitoring on my security system. There are 2 medical bills on my credit but that's it. I paid off a lot of medical bills prior to buying my house, the 2 are recent. I have NEVER had a credit card; they have always been denied. I am starting a new job next week so that may be one reason, but what I would like to know is why my husband can get a credit card when he has a car repo in his past, a $3,000 bill at a jewelry store that's been turned into collections (prior to my meeting him), several credit cards he got with his ex wife that are in default, he has a card right now that has a balance and was closed by the company because of it. The ex wife defaulted on those cards with my husband, has no job, has moved at least a dozen times in 9 years, had 4 cars repoed (at least) and she shows up with a new car a month or so after the repo. HOW IN THE HELL DOES THAT HAPPEN? How can people like that get a credit card but I can't? I do not understand it. It's not like I'm out running up these huge debts, medical bills are an unexpected expense.

Update:

William, I never said I was ENTITLED to credit, I simply wondered why people with existing bad credit can continue to GET credit handed to them while I cannot. I am presently employed and will be starting a new job next week, so what is the problem? I pulled my report and there are only 2 outstanding bills on there, they are less than a year old and like I said, they are medical bills. 3 of the debts I paid off are still showing until the end of this month and my loan and alarm are not on there like I thought they were. The only open account is my mortgage.

Do you actually know your FICO? Discover requires an excellent credit rating. Any slow pays, no pays or items in collection will prevent you from getting one, especially now that credit standards have been tightened. It may be that you are aiming too high in your selection of cards to establish revolving credit. You can get a free copy of your credit reports from the 3 major bureaus at https://annualcreditreport.com/ Look them over carefully for any erroneous items and if you find them, dispute them.

Get a secured card (one that is guaranteed by funds you deposit in a savings account). If your bank doesn't offer one, BoA and Wells Fargo have them for a yearly fee. Make timely, over the limit payments, never go over 30% credit utilization and in a couple of years, the bank may elect to make it an unsecured card with a higher limit.

I know what you mean about people with lousy credit getting cards left and right. It hardly seems fair, but lousy credit with a recent two year good repayment record is generally looked upon more favorably than no credit.

How many paid medical debts are showing on your credit report? Paying them off did not remove them or improve your score. Even if they are more than 3 years old, there are still there. Add the 2 recent medical debts and that makes a lot of defaulted debt.

Factor in your limited number of good accounts and no credit cards and between jobs .... Also all credit cards have tightened up qualification requirements. You may have to get a secured card -- you pay a deposit which is held as collateral against the line of credit. Use the card and pay in full every month. In about a year, you should be able to convert it to a regular account.

You may want to pull your credit report to see what is actually showing. There might be something more. Since you were denied credit, you should be able to get a free report or you can get your free annual reports thru AnnualCreditReport.com

From what I've heard, Discover only issues cards to people with excellent credit. AMEX is pretty picky too.

I'd suggest trying a visa or Mastercard. I got a Capital One Card many years ago, even when my credit wasn't the best. Capital One has also been quite good about raising credit limits on a regular basis, provided the accounts are in good standing. Additionally, every other year I call to ask them to waive the annual fee (pretty low on my card) and they always do it.

I'm not a fan of any credit card company, but can't complain too much about my experiences with Cap. One.

If those medical bills are "on your credit" that means you have defaulted on them and they are negative items. That's one likely reason for the credit denial. You have other existing debt by your own statement. Also, if you are applying in your name only, then only your income is considered for qualification. A future job does not help. Do you CURRENTLY have any income? There is no entitlement to credit cards.

I recommend you checking your credit score to make sure that there is nothing on there that is hurting you. based on what I read you should not have a problem getting a credit card. Each credit card has slightly different requirements, if you cannot get the card you want you may want to settle for a different card until you get your credit score and history up.
