Do I already have too many pets???

Alright, so, I'd really like to get a rat, because my sister has this huge cage I can put it in, and my other sister may be getting a rat too, so they could go in it together. I have one gerbil on my table, and a cage with two gerbils in it on a cupboard. I think it's fairly easy to care for my gerbils, and I recently lost one of my gerbils (D:), so I was thinking about getting a rat. I've read about them and researched and all, so I'm pretty sure I'm capable of caring for a pet rat or two. I already have the space I'm putting the cage in planned out, and my sister was going to bring me to the pet store to get one/some... My dad says I have "enough pets", what do you guys think?

P.S I'm not buying a rat because I'm bored with my gerbils and don't like them, I love my gerbils and just would like a rat.

Update:

Please don't suggest I get my rats from an animal shelter. I'd like to, but there is no shelters close enough to me and my parents aren't going to drive me 6 hours for a rat.

Update 2:

Sorry, I didn't think that last P.S thing through, I meant to say I'm not bored with my gerbils and I love them, but I would like a rat to care for too.

as long as you can give each pet the time, care and space that it needs there really isnt such a thing as 'too many pets'

I have 30 - all get daily attention, exercise and walks, the best and biggest enclosures i can afford, and the best care i can give!

(2 dogs, 4 betta fish, a goldfish, a budgie, 2 parrotlets, 3 cockatiels, 2 corn snakes, 2 bosc monitors, 2 sandfish skinks, an ocelot gecko, 3 crested geckos and 7 leopard geckos)

If your dad thinks enough is enough, then ultimately what he says goes, since the animals will be living in his house and he will be paying for them.

It could always help to save up all of your money to cover the costs of care and any vet bills for both your gerbils and possible rats.

    :)

No i don't think you have too many, as long as each of your pets is given food and water, handled and cleaned out as much as they should be then your doing great and if you can do this for your rats then go ahead, as long as your dad lets you of course, the only thing i would say is that you don't get you rats from a pet shop but from a breeder instead.

Many people don't know the stress that animals go through when being transported and kept in pet stores. A rat from a breeder has been raised in a home environment and tamed and handled and will make a better pet for a first time rat owner.

    Good luck

Person A could have one hamster and have too many pets, whereas person B could have 50 pets and still not have 'too many'.

Point being, it depends on your resources - if there is enough room, enough money and you have enough time then there is no reason to not get another pet.

Having said that, you need to be able to care for your other pets you have IN ADDITION to resources. If you can say to yourself honestly, that 'I will play with my gerbils exactly as much as I do already' and 'I will clean my gerbils out as often as I already do' and all the other questions... then you are able to take on the responsibility of a rat.

As far as the specifics of a rat, make sure you get two rats from the same litter that are the same sex and that live together from the moment you buy them... and if possible get them from a breeder (breeders selectively breed meaning you get a rat with a pedigree that lives longer,is much less likely to get health problems, and is much more tame).

No way lol you do not have to many pets with only a few gerbils. I am looking to get 2-3 rats and i already have 2 dogs, 10 guinea pigs, 1 hamster, 1 tortoise, 1 leopard gecko, 1 corn snake then lots of fish. I say go for it lol and tell you dad my list of animals and that im getting rats as well

You can never have too many as long as you have enough love! (:

I have 5 rats ((I just got a new pup last week)) and I love them all to death, along with my dog.

If you get ratties though- I would reccommend you get two, just because they are social creatures and live in packs. The only way you can have a solitary rat is if you have A LOT of free time for them. Plus its always nice for them to have a cuddle buddy (:

Just a note: Try looking at your local animal shelter for rats before a pet store. I got Darby from Table Mountain Shelter and hes one of the sweetest rats I've ever owned

    Hope this helps!

your bored with the gerbil and dont like them but you love them????? that makes no sense.

you will just get bored with the rat as well.

also gerbils are social as well that one needs another friend.
