Constantly check for deals or coupons (Dell), there are bulletin board websites like fatwallet or slickdeals. Or, wait events: back to school, cyber Monday, or black Friday. Unfortunately I bet there are few cheap laptops since the netbooks took over.

My cousin has a brand-name $300 laptop, black Friday two years ago. My netbook was $180, clearance, a year ago.
