how was the challenger disaster a turning point in history?

the challenger explosion was a major disaster in the space program, just years after they had began. what results of the explosion changed our history? programs, modifcations in the NASA program, etc.

    I remember it well. I would back off of the "turning point" description because NASA had gone through some bad experiences before like when Grissom and 2 others died in the fire in the cockpit and then the most recent explosion of the space shuttle over Texas.

    The reason Challenger was devastating was because there had been so much publicity because of Christa MacAuliffe, the first teacher in space. So many young school children were watching the lift-off and it exploded before their very eyes. It was a senseless tragedy. It seemed to take a long time to determine that it was the O-ring that caused it.

    I think the funding diminished for NASA because of huge budget deficits and unclear, seemingly fruitless objectives.
