Does anyone know if it is OK to unplug a water softener for several months?

I want to know if this could cause any kind of problem. Also, does it hurt anything when it runs out of salt and is not filled right away? The water softener was here when I moved in & I have no manual or anything. I may want to resume using it later. Any knowledge you have on this would be greatly appreciated.

It won't hurt to run it without salt. It just won't filter the water. Aquafer changes. Have the water tested to see if you still need the filters
