Mirena vs Implanon... what are your personal experiences?

I need to switch birth control- I can no longer use any method with estrogen for medical reasons, and i cannot gt the Paragard because I'm allergic to copper. I'm going to be taking Micronor for the next month or so, but it needs to be taken at exactly the same time every day, and I'm not going to be able to pull that off for long. Mirena and Implanon are my top two choices right now, and I've read a lot of good and bad reviews for both (however it seems like there are a lot more negatives regarding the Implanon's side effects) but am just curious as to what your personal experiences are, and if you would recommend either one of these methods. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Note: I am 21 yrs old with no children and no plans to have any any time soon, and I am in a long term monogamous relationship

You can't know how either of them will affect you until you try them. I don't know much about Implanon, but it is supposed to be the most effective form of reversible birth control available (99.95%) and lasts for 3 years. Mirena is 99.9% effective, and lasts for 5 years... I imagine that you can have Implanon taken out before the time is up, and I know you can have Mirena removed at any time if it's not working or you want to try to conceive. I'd recommend Mirena over Implanon purely off of anecdotal reports, but like I said, there's really no way to know which one will cooperate best with your body.

These forums will probably be more helpful than Y/A!:

I have the Implanon. Ive had it for about 3months now. I got this one so that i wouldn't have to worry about taking a pill everyday and 3 years is a long enough wait for me before i have another child. It was a really easy process having it put in. And as far and whether or not i like it, so far its kind of up in the air! It does take some time for your periods to stop or become regular. and so far mine are still irregular, but im looking forward to the time they stop all together!! Which will hopefully be very soon! other than irregularity with my period, ive had no other side effects. so i think that i would recommend this one. However, if you know that you do want to wait another 5 years before you have a child, then the Mirena may be a better idea. Ive heard some good things about it as well. Although, ive had some friends that have had it, and have had a constant period as well. You may just want to talk to your doctor about it a little more before you make a decision.

well usually a dr wants you to have a kid before you get mirena since its a possibility it can make you sterile and it can punch a hole in your ovary.also before you have sex and every so often you have to check to see if it has moved (meaning coming out) That's why i didn't get it i went with implanon so far so good. i have had it for 4 months and i love it and have no period. i have had no side affects and its no bothersome. but if your scared of needles probably not the best even though it was quick and painless

  • I am currently using the implanon and i love it!!! i have no period and no kids for the next 3yrs... i dont have to take a pill everyday nor do i have strings hangin out my cooch!!! I recommend it
