shouldnt shows like scrubs gain fans and not lose them over the years?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrubs_(TV_series)

based on that it says that the viewers in millions declined every year since season 2 wouldnt it make more sense for the show to gain a bigger audience the more years it plays for... i just cant understand why it would be that way

Most shows start small and then peak and then decline. This is because when the show first comes out the audience grows through word of mouth. The audience then declines because of lackluster plot or the repetition of the same scenarios over and over again. Shows with staying power hold their ratings until the end and go out in a blaze of glory with the audience missing them, other shows hit their peak and continue to go until they are canceled and are looked back on less fondly.
