Television and torture?

French Television have just run a version of the notorious Milgram experiments as a reality game-show.

"Out of 80 players just 16 walked out refusing to administer the shocks."

"TV contestants 'electrocute' rivals"

Milgram got only 65% killers. They got over 80%

Is it "just television", or do the majority of us only take even our most basic morality from our local culture and authority figures?

Would you buck the norm? Why are you so sure?

Nobody is completely sure until they are actually tested. I've invested a great deal of thought and energy into developing a coherent moral paradigm. All I can say is that I would be devastated if I went along with something like this against my personal convictions. I'm pretty sure I would buck the norm. But I know far too much of the weakness and folly of our species to bet my life on it.

I think it's misleading, as the very nature of the "experiment" is going to skew the results.

Given the fact it is a TV show with an audience and the lack of secrecy inherent in a public event, it would be quite reasonable of the contestants to assume that either the shocks were completely fake or that adequate safety measures were in place.

Were it done in private, with no witnesses and a greater degree of uncertainty as to the reality of events then I would expect a very different set of results.
