Duffel bag/suitcase problem on a plane?

I'm 17, and flying for the first time down to Florida with my best friend this summer.

My mom said I couldn't take any duffel bags, and I could only take suitcases because duffel's can't be checked. Is that true? Because I hate suitcases, I think duffels are better, especially with the way I pack. And what about backpacks?

Basically just explain the backpack/duffel bag/suitcase thing about checked luggage.

Thanks!!

You can check duffel bags on every flight I have ever been on. You just need to make sure that it fits the size and weight requirements or they may charge you a fee. I have never checked a backpack, but I have used it as my carry-on several times. You don't mention which airline you will be flying, but all the airlines have websites that detail their baggage requirements. Have fun in Florida!
