Cold Air Intake. Can it damage your car's engine?

Thinking about installing one....

Update:

What do you guys think of Injen?

Update 2:

Oh, that sucks, the puddle comment. What is the likelihood of that happening?

Update 3:

Personally, it's more for show and I like the sound. Other than that, I understand the supposed 10-15 hp gain is merely marketing. Overall, I would like to thank you guys for your answers. Very informative.

Update 4:

Thanks to everyone that answered my question. Special thanks to da Cobie and BaloonRich. For the record, I live in Northern California. The Greater San Francisco Bay Area to be exact.

If you use a low quality filter, it can actually restrict airflow to your engine. The minimum should be a K&N CAI. It can also be damaging if the open element is located low in the engine compartment and you live in a very wet area, leading to hydrolock which can be fatal to your engine.

Injen sounds the best to me, but quite honestly all of them give around the same minimal gains. Injen is solid though, and all of their products are always top notch.

Chances of water seizing up your engine are slim, but it really depends on the car (where the filter would be located) and how wet it gets in your area.

as long as it is installed properly it shouldn't damage your engine. It also doesn't really help that much, so unless you are doing it just for looks, I wouldn't bother.

The 6 to 10 HP gains claimed by the manufacturers of these things isn't true and even if it was, 6 to 10 hp is the difference between driving with the a/c on or off. You're not going to notice much, if any.

and claims of increasing HP any more than that from a Cold air intake are just silly.

The only damage that can be caused is, as someone else said, if you drive through a puddle and the engine sucks in water.

As long as it's installed correctly (no air leaks allowing unfiltered air into engine), no it won't hurt anything. If you are going to use a K&N air filter be sure to service it on a routine basis and don't overly oil it as the extra oil can contaminate the Mass Airflow Sensor if your car has one.

No way. Your present air filter will filter the air. It's not much of a difference from what you have now, it's just a few degrees colder, that's all.
