What do you think of Greek food?

This probably sounds really stupid, but I haven't ever tried Greek food. I want to try it. Can you give me some really good things to try and what they're made of.

I love Greek food--it's fresh and healthy.

You can always try a gyro, but I like Spanakopita which is a spinach pie made with flaky phyllo dough. Moussaka is also very good, but very rich. It's similar to a lasagna but with layers of eggplant instead of noodles and a meat mixture and a white bechamel sauce. Greek meats are usually grilled and they use a lot of citrusy seasoning. Make sure to try hummus if you've never had it too, which is a chickpea puree that they usually serve with warm pita to dip in.

I worked 15 years in a Greek restaurant and cook it all the time.

The elaborate meat dishes aren't for everyday.

Regular dishes you can try in a Greek place that are very good and popular with Americans include cheese pie, spinach pie, stuffed grape leaves, large beans with tomato sauce, stefatho or stew, and Greek rice pudding. Their favorite cheese is called "feta", made from goat's milk, and you can add it to a lot of things as you would parmesan.

To learn about Greek food, which apart from Easter desserts is healthy and has a lot of taste, there's two best ways:

    1. Go to a Greek restaurant and have a pita bread sandwich with feta--that's a goodintroduction.

You can ask a few questions too; the menus usually describe the dish pretty thoroughly.

    2. Make a basic Greek salad.

spinach leaves and green lettuce; add diced red onion (not too much), cut up black olives, a cut up tomato of choice, cut up green onion, including some of the green part, cubed medium cheddar and some crumbled feta to taste. As a dressing Seven Seas Italian or Ranch or any light Italian or a Greek vinaigrette. And have some good bread or pita bread with it.

    Enjoy!

I love Greek food and actually live in Greek Town in Chicago. My favorite place does seafood in the Greek manner and I am quite partial to that.

Some people might say the appetizer Flaming Cheese (Saganaki) is cliche, but I love it. I also like Taramasalata, a flavorful dip made from bread (believe it or not) that you dip cut up veggies in. Stuffed Grape leave (Dolmas) weren't to my liking the first time I had them (many years ago) and I haven't gone back to try them, but they always look and smell good when my friends order them. Grilled octopus salad is wonderful and where I dine can be served hot or cold.

Lamb is a very popular dish in Greek cuisine and while I don't eat lamb, my friends and family do love it prepared in the Greek style.

There are several types of pasta available in Greek restaurants as well as kebabs (kabobs) of lamb, chicken, etc. usually served on a bed of rice.

As a side dish I don't think you can beat potatoes served in the Greek-style.

My favorite dish where I dine is called Shrimp Tourkolimano, a shrimp dish with a rich tomato sauce and feta cheese. It is what I usually order when I go out. I love it so much that I came up with my own version to make at home.

I like it. Try a Gyro. They serve them at a lot of fairs and carnivals. It's like sandwich in soft pita bread with a cucumber sauce, onions, and beef, lamb or chicken. Greek salads are good too. They have feta cheese, olive oil and olives.
