Expansion of the Universe?

In astronomy class last year I learned that the the Universe's expansion was at an accelerating rate. However, lately I have read some reputable books that say the expansion rate is decreasing and will continue to decrease without ever completely stopping. What gives?

I don't know what "reputable books" you read that from, but the expansion rate is definitely not slowing down.

The accelerated expansion of the universe has been corroborated by several independent sources in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007: the cosmic microwave background radiation and large scale structure, age of the universe, as well as improved measurements of the supernova, and X-ray properties of galaxy clusters.

Indeed, the expansion is accelerating. The reputable books were accurate, say, pre-1990s. Check the dates on the books, and you may have your explanation :D
