Should I do something or mind my own business?

I'll try to keep this as concise as possible. My husband has been having an argument on a Meetup discussion board with a woman over vaccinating children. She is not vaccinating hers because she believes that vaccines cause autism. Whether or not you agree is irrelevent. What alarmed me was that she went on to say that she and her husband will be dropping their health insurance and only treating their children with holistic medicine from now on, no doctors or "modern" medicine. I find this incredibly irresponsible and even dangerous. Do I have an obligation to contact Child Protective Services to report her, in hopes that they will be able to help her see how inane this idea is? You only have to think of the religious nuts who have let their children die of easily treated and cured diseases, thinking that "god" will cure them. This woman is not a Christian, yet her intentions smack of the same self-righteous stupidity that has unnecessarily led to the deaths of many children. What do you think? Should I call CPS, or mind my own business?

You are self-righteous and ignorant. Mind your own business. Get a life instead of insinuating yourself into the lives of people who didn't invite you in and whom you don't even know!

It is one of those: "Consider the alternative" things. Sure it sounds abusive to only use alternative/holistic medicine, but some people consider it abusive to only use "modern" medicine and never consider alternatives. Humans are diverse and have the right to take risks with their diversity. The alternative would be FORCED standardized medicine. Yipes!

When it comes to children, it is tough. For most of us, we instinctively want to see children taken care of; that means by OUR standard of being cared for, though. Part of the reason to have children is to pass on our values and standards so that means that we also will pass on our risks and experiments. That may mean that someone else's children are sometimes put at risk in a way that they deem acceptable and we deem unnecessary. It is a tough call.

Life is a tough call. Life is full of risks and dangers. Sometimes those risks pay off, sometimes they do not.

A prominent group of MODERN medical professionals released statistic that "proved" through modern medicine that certain vaccines cause autism; at the same time other modern medical professionals release articles saying that they could not reproduce those results. As with a lot of new information it was conflicting and parents "correctly" had to make their own decisions who to believe. Many parents stopped getting their children vaccinated. Some children died. Some children survived and became virus resilient. It is tough to judge which was better.

The group that claimed that the vaccines caused autism only recently admitted that they fudged the statistics because they were so SURE that it was true. Did this make parents rush out and get their children vaccinated? No. In most cases it made parents not trust modern medicine at all...

I don't think its a crime to not have health insurance is it? You didn't mention if their children had on going illnesses or diseases, if so, its the parents business whether to send their children to a doctor or not. It sounds like you're the self-righteous one and, the one that needs to mind her own business.

I think it isnt your responsibility. And I do think holistic medicine is far better anyway (but only if can be easily treated) and i have no faith in doctors.

I would call and report her,l if their mother doesn't have the ability to make a rash decision then someone needs to be aware of it.

You don't get a do over when it comes to children.

That way you have gone over her behavior with a professional and they can decide if it is the proper action to go forward.

I'd call the authorities. They may or may not do anything, but at least these parents will be on their list after that. Children have died in the care of idiots like that many times before.

If the children aren't in immediate danger CPS won't do anything, anyway. So mind your own business and let people raise their children how they please.

  • I'd let it go. If their kid ends up on a death bed from their idiocy, watch how fast they become believers in modern medicine.
