Could you cite some adoption facts and stats?

Hi all,

I read an answer earlier that stated about 80% of adoptions are "sold" as OPEN for the purposes of getting the adoption through...but closed after. I'm not disputing this...I would just like to know where the numbers came from since it is such an important issue for our family.

This also got me thinking on some other facts mentioned here and if you could indulge me, I would like to have some links or references for these too.

1-2% of parents relinquish willingly without coercion etc...

The majority of relinquishing parents are in their 20's....

Any other facts that can be added to the list are welcome. I just think it would be great for some (for me certainly) to have a handful of these references on hand in one question and answer group.

Thanks everyone.

Update:

@Kitta: Yep...in Canada but any sources are fine so long as it's clear where they came from.

As for the secretive nature of adoption, I get that. At the same time, some of these statistics are very important to others making decisions or in my case, just wanting to be clear on what is really going on. If they are not from some legit source, I personally question their validity. So, you're right...it's quite the dilemma that way.

To add: I can read through the "legit" stats if they come from an agency, adoption site etc...

I appreciate your time on this everyone.

Try googling Evan B Donaldson. They are an independent non profit agency that studies adoption from all angles. They have stats on research they have done.

    Ferbs,

you are in Canada, correct? Do you want figures for Canada, then?

No one in the USA will officially admit to there being adoption coercion here. Coercion is a crime.

CPS takes children, of course, and there are figures on those numbers of children. They are kept by the states or the counties.

There are 'studies" and "surveys" but they are not scientific.

The system is still very secretive. Adoption is secretive.

I've tried getting statistics in the past but it is so difficult. On the rare occasion I have they've been so vague that it hasn't been worth posting them anywhere. It's that hard that even down to getting real statistics on surrendering mothers who have suffered secondary infertility is hard as I have seen varying statistics. To broadcast true statistics would be damaging to the adoption industry. Even BSE is based on how long it lasted in the USA yet it went on much longer in the UK yet abortions have been legal here since 1967 but BSE didn't end till the 1980's compared to 1972 (1973?) in the States due to Roe v Wade.
