The "TIP" system is unfair. In many areas the servers get paid under $3.00 per hour because the "tips" bring the hourly wage up to the minimum wage, in theory.

In some restaurants the servers are actually charged the fee that is charged to the restaurant when a tip is put on a charge. Because of this I never put a tip on a charge. I put in "0.00" then draw a line through the tip section and leave the tip in cash.

If we eliminated the "tips" and the owners of the restaurants paid the wages they should, the prices would have to reflect the added wages, things might be better for some but others would probably get far less than they are earning in tips.

Then some people may not realize that in some restaurants the tips are pooled and shared with the cooks, busboys and other members of the staff.

I think it would be wonderful to eliminate this type of system. Imagine the concept to go into a restaurant, get good service from people that are earning what they deserve. And knowing that you will pay for what you order not have to figure out if the server was lousy=10 or less%, good=15%, great=20% or possibly more. Add that the other people that have their hands out along the way, the Host or Hostess, bartender, wine steward, coat check person on and on....

Why should the fact that I had a bad day and judge some one to be good or better or the server had a good or bad day have an effect on what they earn?

Check with the state where you live as to how the wages are supposed to be calculated.

I've worked in the restaurant business for most of my life. It can be customary for servers to pool tips. Or every server keeps their own tips. You normally tip out a percentage to your bus people, maybe the hostess and in some instances I've heatrd of a percentage going to the kitchen. But I think it might be illeagal for the managers to keep your tips. What are you being taxed on? I'd call your state's labor board and tell them the situation.

I reckon if you receive the tip its for you and you just pocket it, or if your restaurant has a tip jar it should be divided weekly throughout the staff as that is far.

Your manager gets tips? This is illegal in most places. Management is not allowed to participate in tip pools. Go to this site for more information on who is legally allowed to participate in tip pools and who isn't. It is very informative. http://www.877tippool.com/
