Solving 2 unknowns: A piece of steel is welded to a horizontal truss forming two angles with the truss.?

A piece of steel is welded to a horizontal truss forming two angles with the truss. The larger of the 2 angles is 2 1/2º more than twice the smaller angle. Find the angle measurements.

What I know is that they both = 180º. I'm confused by "the larger is 2 1/2º more than twice"...

How can I stop the fear of these type of word problems?

THX!

    Call the smaller angle S and the larger angle L.

    L = 2S + 2.5.

    L + S = 180. Substitute L = 2S + 2.5 in this equation for L and solve for S.

    (2S + 2.5) + S = 180.

    3S + 2.5 = 180. Subtract 2.5 from both sides of the equation.

    3S = 177.5. Divide both sides by 3.

    S = 59.1666 repeating Answer for the smaller angle.

    L = 120.8333 repeating. Answer for larger angle.
