Am I able to do Ballet . . .?

I am 15 and am going to start doing ballet again, I dod it for about a year or two when I was 6 or something.

I was just wondering if i'd be able to go far in it because i don't exactly have a "ballet body" and I've started to late to go professional or anything.

I talked to my friend who does ballet who said i'd be about grade 4/5 level. I rang up a ballet school and they said they'd put me in a grade 3 class for the first time but probably move me up quickly.

i'm about 5'5 and 132 lbs. Other problem is when i stand on the ground my feet are completely flat, but when i point them or go on the balls of my feet they have quite good arches, could this be a problem.

Also, i'd wouldn't be able to be a soloist in a company but could I be a corps de ballet in a small company or something, i've got sort of average flexibility i can put my head to my knee and to the floor when i'm sitting on the floor, and i'm a few inches of the ground in my right and left split.

Is ballet for me, or should i do other dance?

Update:

Thanks everyone for thje answers som many of them are good I couldn't choose a best one!!

I guessed that it'd be too late before I asked the question I just wanted to be sure for definate. I like to sing aswell, does anyine think I could use ballet to go into musical theatre?

It is great that you want to take up ballet, but honestly even in a small company you will not likely become corps de ballet. One reason for this is that many companies like NYCB (New York City Ballet) have laid off lots of dancers (11 last season). They will be filling those jobs. Jobs are few and hard to get and there are so many dancers who are ballet academy trained (since age 7) at the top ballet academies (taking 30 hours a week of classes) with perfect ballet bodies and they are not getting work. Also your ballet training should be done at age 16 and you are expected to apprentice in a company at that age. You will be way too old by the time you get your skills together and as you said you don't have the body. Only 2% of the population has it. No ballet academy would seriously train someone your age and without that too, you do not stand a chance. I am sorry, but I am speaking the truth.

No reason you cannot do it for fun and dance in local productions in studio companies. Who said you have to be paid to enjoy dance.

*edit: Yes, ballet training is very helpful for musical theater or any other type of dance.

I really hate answering this question and it comes up so often. I always say to myself, should I tell the truth or give false hope. The truth always wins out. Vlad is correct. You have no chance and anyone you tells you that you can has no clue what they are talking about. You have a much better chance at winning the lottery or getting picked off the street to star in the next blockbuster movie. It is physically impossible to get the skill you would in in 2 years and that is all you have tops. Even someone with the most gifts and a perfect ballet body and trained by David Howard himself, 6 days a week starting at this age couldn't do it.

The truth is the girls on here who take ballet class 3 times a week in a small studio have no chance either. If you are not putting in the kind of hours that require home school and special schools to coordinate with the massive amount of training that is required, it just isn't going to happen for you. Ballet is all about perfecting technique. That takes years and the very best teachers. Even with those things, and a perfect ballet body, most of the girls trained in top ballet academies like SAB will not get a job. That is the sad truth of it. But... dance is a wonderful gift to give yourself. Do it for the joy of it. The life of a ballet dancer is short, hard and filled with many injuries that last a lifetime.

it's never too late to start ballet. But if you want, you could take Jazz dance, which is sort of a combination of ballet and hip hop and it's a little bit easier to remember the different dance moves. But if you set your heart on taking ballet, good for you. I take ballet, Jazz, and hip-hop and it's great. dance is a amazing way to express yourself.

    Hope i helped!!

ive been dancing since i was four , im almost 15 and im at a professional level already , but im not saying you cant do ballet , you can do ballet and become really good at it and even be in a company but its going to take a lot of dedication and hard work, you cant just do ballet once a week ,since your a little bit older youre going to have to train everyday.if this is really what you what then go for it ! who knows maybe one day you'll be in a professional company . and oh yeah the flexibility thing will improve so muchh once you start taking dance but there is a lot more to ballet then flexibility

its never to late to start dance. and if your really want to go professional, its just means your going to have to want it a lot and work for it! your going to need to be dedicated! There are many dancers who have been training since they were little and cant find work, so your gonna need to be really good. so practice! if your really dedicated i think you should try at least! i wouldnt worry about your ballet body either, because once you start dancing enough youll get it, or at least close. I think you have the potential to be a dancer, your just going to need to work hard to get it. practice every night, and stretch to increase your flexibility. One great stretch is over splits! over splits will help a lot. if you dont know what they are, its a split but stretched out more. and i know you cant do a regualr one, but it doesnt matter this will help you get the regular one. It will push you beyond or limit and stretch out the muscle more increasing its flexibility. So youll want to start off with just a stack of pillows or a small step. Put one foot/leg on the stack and do a split. it will stretch it out more than doing a regular one. do the same with the back leg. Its just a matter of your flexibility thats stopping you from getting your splits. If its a straddle split just do the same thing with a straddle. Do these every night and you will get them soon! heres i video if you dont get it.

and remember, even if you cant become a professional, dancing for fun is the next best thing!

If you do five hundred sit ups a day and twenty chin ups you should be fine.
