What can I say to be polite in Flemish?

I've got to get from Antwerp docks ( and I do mean dock yard - traveling by freighter, not cruise ship ) to possibly an hotel and definitely the railway station - I'm not sure what time of day the ship is going to dock. My French is so-so, my German almost fluent. As I'll be arriving in Antwerp from Quebec on a Polish ship ... I'm sad to say I'm not even sure of the Flemish for 'Flemish'.

Flemish for Flemish is "Vlaams", but the language is actually Dutch (Nederlands), Vlaams is basically just a dialect of Dutch (kind of like what they speak in Texas vs stiff upper lip British, etc).

You should get around just fine with French, German and English though.

Dank u wel - thank you

    Alstublieft - please

Spreekt u Duits? - do you speak German?

Spreekt u Frans? - do you speak French?

Spreekt u Engels? - do you speak English?

Ik kom uit Canada - I come from Canada

Hoe kom ik op centraal station? - How do I get to central station?

    Rechtdoor - straight on

    Links - left

    Rechts - right

    Eerste - first

    Tweede - second

    Derde - third

    Vierde - fourth

    Stoplicht - traffic light

    Kruising - intersection

Splitsing - where one road splits into two, a Y-shaped intersection

    Bus - bus

    Trein - train

    Metro - subway

    Tram - tram

Halte - (bus or tram) stop

    Stoppen - to stop

Uitstappen - get off (the bus/train)

Instappen - get on (the bus/train)

Flemish is called Vlaams and is the Southern dialect of Dutch.

    Some nice things to say:

    Good Morning - Goede Morgen

    Good evening - Goeden avond

    Thank you - Dank U

    Excuse me - Excuseer

    Please - alstublieft

    Enjoy (food) - Smakelijk eten

    Beautiful - mooi

What is your name - Wat is Uw naam

Pleased to meet you - Aangenaam U kennen te leren

Do you speak English - Spreekt U Engels ?

I don't speak Flemish - Ik spreek geen Vlaams.

I hope these will help you. But don't worry EVERYBODY in Antwerp speaks English. My Mom was from Antwerp.
