Do atheists perform certain rituals when someone's going to die?

And do they perform certain rituals at someone's burial?

Update:

Guys, thanks for your answers, but I'm not stupid. I do know what an atheist is and all, it's just a question for a homework assignement.

And since it's a question from the book I thought I'd ask.

Yes. If it's one of the many clergy who abuse children and prey on underage girls, we tend to be rather happy at the demise of such people.

But for others, such as friends and family, we do have rituals. We tend to visit them at home or in the hospital, we frequently will bring flowers, and also offer to help in any way.

At a burial, I tend to stand quietly, even if it's a religious ceremony. While I don't believe in religion, I have good manners, and won't disrupt any religious ceremony.

I believe in freedom of religion, freedom FROM religion, and good manners.

They likely fall back on the rituals they learned before they "became atheists." They hate admitting it but so many of them were strong and faithful believers way back when. Then daddy or mummy died from cancer after smoking five packs a day for 20 years and they blamed GOD....who of course does not exist. But they'll never tell you that since D'Nile ain't just a river in Egypt. ;-)

No, I have no rituals when someone is going to die and most funerals I have been to have been religious as have no say about what other people want for their funerals. I do not however pray.

My funeral however, will have no religion involved.

No. Rituals are generally associated with religious beliefs, and atheism isn't a religion.

Um....not really, because they're atheist. Atheism is the religion of no religion. Atheists don't belive in a God or all those rituals.

I sat at my mothers bedside a lot, just before she died. At her request there was no funeral, but she wanted to be cremated and have her ashes sprinkled in the ocean, so I arranged to have them sent to my brother who took them out on her boat. There was no big meeting of friends and family, but if she had asked for that, I would have arranged it for her.

It is a tradition in my culture when you know you are near to death or a particular heavy burden on your loved ones. To go outside and expose ourselves to die. You go out, pick a nice spot and wait. Then after paying back the debt to the birds and beasts, any remaining bony bits are collected up and buried in an unmarked grave. Perfect.

PS. of course this is particular to sparsely populated areas, can't imagine it catching on in say New York. lolz

We perform funerals just like the rest of society, and we console our loved ones before death just like you do, we just don't read out of a book at the funeral.
