Need an old-school opinion about a 350 head swap and cam installation.?
I have an original 1977 350 with 70,000 miles on it. I have a water leak in the #6 cylinder since replacing the radiator last week. I have a couple sets of gaskets on hand and the original engine on a stand now. I am not financially ready to rebuild either engine yet. I want to clean the heads, lap the valves, and install Z28 springs on the spare set (same 882 heads). Then install them with a Comp. 270H cam. My friend whom I drag race with swears I'll "blow the bottom end out" if I do this. The rings don't leak, it has new gaskets including rear seal, new oil pump and new timing gears and chain. I've twisted the motor past 6,000 as is. It's not as if I'm changing the compression ratio. It is a solid runner. Anyone have an informed opinion to help make my case? I'm just a true believer of Chevy dependability.
These are two numbers match engines for my El Camino, don't want to change anything. I'm not a horsepower freak, my truck has nearly enough as is. It spins the tires at will.

I am a cam designer/manufacturer & full competition engine builder.
The 882 casting head is the poorest flowing factory casting head ever produced for a 4 inch bore block. THe 305 heads are designed around a smaller bore, so don't use them. They will flow less so your cylinder pressure will drop in terms of dynamic pressure. Static compression will increase but you will put less air in the cylinder to compress. For the money, bolt on a pair of 062 casting vortec heads and the vortec flange intake manifold to go with it.
As for the cam, I have things that beat the comp stuff all around and anytime. If you are going to run a comp, the best all around street "shelf" grind cam of theirs you are going to get is their 268 High energy. The first one. Our founder designed that cam for them back in 1977.
Install a fel pro 1094 head gasket to tighten the quench.
A simple Z28 spring with a set of 7 degree "machined" valve locks will be good.

can go with the 480 lift 280H comp cam(highest duration can go with stock converter) with stock springs will hold up just fine, but would watch taking over 6,G;s with stock pistons and heads with the cam the valves will float at 6500 and not getting any more power from engine at that rpm, should keep at or below 6,000. and blowing out the bottom end,you don't have enough compression, with stock pistons to worry about throwing a rod.the Z28 springs are not any different than the stock springs on the heads now,if you want top change out any way it's up too you but lap the valves and be done with it for now,if you can find a set of HO 305 heads will up the compression some with the 58 cc combustion chambers.

I don't know what he means "blow the bottom end out". I would be afraid the rings would be about worn out and if you turn it high rpm consistently it will begin to lose compression and burn oil. If a leak down test shows everything to be in good shape then you should not have any problems. If it was my car I would go ahead like you are planning and as soon as possible I would go for a better set of heads. Even late model Vortec iron heads will make more difference than anything else.

i think of approximately seventy 5% I grew up interior the previous college era as nicely. BDP became and nonetheless is my own favourite. it form of sounds like hip-hop became greater useful all around then. there have been soooo many super artists out on the comparable time. The hip hop way of existence exploded in many sorts. We had the MC Hammer/youngster & Play/clean Prince form rappers donning the balloon pants and the extreme suited fades, & polka dots. The greater sturdy rappers with the super gold rope chains/leather-based coats, loc solar glasses like Run DMC, Eric B &Rakim, Cool Mo Dee. And we had the concious rappers with the Africa medallions. BDP, unfavourable Rightious instructors, XKlan, Digable Planets,PE. Then the ladys-Salt & Peppa earings, Queen Latifah hats, biker shorts, layered bobs. Then got here Gangsta rap, and each thing replaced. are not getting me incorrect, The persistent album & NWA became the sh!t, yet by some potential rap fell off. It went from the Jeffersons to sturdy situations. There are some super rappers now, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it would not have the exciting, interest, and exhilaration that it had back then. Rap made statements back interior the day. it rather is annoying to take exhilaration in what's out now. sturdy question btw.
