Whats the advantage of taking photos in raw format?

My Lumix camera has 3 formats to choose from Jpeg, Tiff and raw.

I dont have the cd that came with the camera.

Is there a free downloadable raw converter software I can try.

Update:

I have tried Paintshop Pro7, and Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and could not even sucesfully display the image. They come out like corrupted files.

RAW takes the picture as-is. The camera does not try to make any corrections/modifications/whatever. It just takes the picture. Also, the camera does not use any compression on the photo such as GIF or JPEG. This makes RAW pictures quite a bit larger and you get fewer pictures per chip. The advantage to RAW is that you get a truer image of what you're shooting at. Any/all modifications to the picture data is then done with your PC's software (such as Photoshop).

As for the software I can recommend you this one: http://imageconverterplus.com/ Lots of conversion options, plus supports RAW files from lots of cameras.
