how the symbol of the albatross relates to the theme of christianity and the purging of sins?

    It sounds more like a Catholic thing than a Christian thing. The best thing that comes to mind is "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge. In the poem a captain kills an albatross that helped the ship through some fog. After that he had to wear it around his neck.
