I'm 22 but the grocery store won't sell my liquor. What do I do?
My name is Rachel, and I'm 22 years old. On New Years (when 2009 turned to 2010), I went to a Chicago Jewel-Osco grocery store. They refused to sell me a bottle of wine because my driver's license says "under 21 until 2008." It's now 2010, not 2008, and I'm of legal age now. I let it go because I figured thats what they were telling people that night to discourage underage kids trying to buy liquor.
I continued to buy alcohol from that store for a while after. Today, March 22nd 2010, I was told the same thing again. The store refused to sell me liquor because my drivers license said "under 21 until 2008." I found this frustrating on many levels, especially since I'm of-age. How can they refuse to sell me liquor when I'm NOT a minor. I asked to speak to a manager. They let me speak to someone named Bruce who was in fact NOT a manager. He said the reason they wouldn't sell me the alcohol was because of a new policy in the store. I asked to see the policy in writing and he was not able to provide.
I'm of age. I'm not a student. It's insulting that they won't sell me liquor, but won't be able to show me proof of this policy, and yet some clerks in this store will still sell me liquor. I work full time as a film/video editor and it's not easy at all for me to make it back to St.Louis to get a new drivers license.
I've already written a complaint to the store. I said "You're a competitive store, please tell what your store can do for me to fix this situation, or should I give my business to another competitor?"
What do I need to do to get this fixed? Go to the stupidest looking cashier next time????

Sounds like you just need to get a new driver's license. Is yours expired? It sounds that way.

First I would demand to speak with an actual manager. If they don't let you speak to an actual manager then find a comment card (most stores have them) and see if there is a number on the card for the corporate office. Call it and complain. It seems that the employees don't have proper training to accept IDs and that may be against state law. Remind them of this and they'll probably act on it. Nobody wants to deal with the liquor commission. XP
Check the site below. It's for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission's education division. Call them and tell the the problem and they may be willing to help also. ;D
Good luck!

It sounds like your license is outdated and confusing. If you've moved to Chicago, you should get an Illinois license and that will solve all your problems.
If your permanent home is in St. Louis, you might be able to order a reissue to be sent to your permanent home address, without having to show up in person. It will probably not have "under 21" printed on the reissue.

Jewel-Osco no longer accepts the vertical drivers licenses. Some checkers will let it slide, after advising you to get a new ID.

Many states have IDs for people who don't drive. Contact the state DMV to find out how to get one or call the office of the state representative.
I'm sympathetic. A bartender once refused to serve me when I had valid ID (draft card), claiming that some had been stolen in that area. He wanted to see a driver's licence and, at that time, I didn't drive. I got some small revenge on him later but ir was a bit embarassing at the moment.

You could just quit drinking. Don't buy at Jewel. I have bought in Chicago with no ID for over 30 years now.

This is a simple one. Get a new license. Can't you go to any motor vehicles location and get a new license? It's just a renewal so it does not take long at all.

They don't legally have to sell you alcohol (or anything else for that matter), and can turn you away for just about any reason they like.
I'd suggest simply shopping somewhere else.

Your license expires when you turn 21 so either go get a new license or don't get alcohol.
