Migraines - Do you get them for no reason?

Do you get them for no reason?

I have tried, diets, food elimination, food diaries, long term preventative medication (all types), lifestyle changes, acupuncture, massage, weight loss, weight gain, cranial massage, hormone replacement, pain management clinics, posture re-alignment, 5-htp, allergy testing etc etc etc and nothing seems to work to stop them - only Triptans work when I have an attack but where I live my Primary Care Trust only lets me have 6 tablets a month - due only to cost - not medical need. I can still wake up or just get a migraine without warning. How many a month do YOU get. Thanks.

Ugh! I get migraines! Migraines are caused by the veins in your brain expanding, too much pressure inside the skull makes for a lot of pain. I've really simplified the cause but gave the basic idea. I get my migraines every month when I get PMS. I also get them when I have any additional stress, or something really upsets me. Then there are the ones that come along for no reason that I'm aware of, I just stay in the dark and silence and avoid direct sunlight and harsh lighting, hoping it will go away if caught in time. Some years back I injured my spine, had a herniated disk, and because it was so severe, so bad, I had migraines at least twice a week. I was constantly in the ER! After surgery and the disk was released, the constant pressure on the nerves and spine, they went back to normal and I have maybe two a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less, it just depends. I must say that the worst feeling is when you wake up after you've been suffering from one only to discover it's still there. What misery!

Migraines cannot be cured. However, you can avail of available treatment to help you control or relieve their symptoms. Your doctor will prescribe medication – based on details such as age, physical health, frequency or severity of the pain, existing medical problems, and special conditions such as pregnancy or breast feeding.

In people with depression, drugs taken to help migraines can sometimes interact with anti-depressant drugs that they may be taking, leading to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome which can even prove fatal. To prevent any such complications it is important that you take medication for migraine only under strict consultation with your doctor.

But, apart from medication, self-help behavior and lifestyle modification form an important part of treatment for migraines. If you suffer from migraines, these are some tips to help you to prevent or restrict the frequency of your attacks:

    * Avoid triggers such as foods or smells that you know can lead to an episode.

    * Give up alcohol, smoking and caffeine.

    * Avoid using artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

    * Learn to relax and find ways to deal with your stress.

    * Ensure that you enjoy adequate and regular sleep.

    * Adopt a regular exercise regime.

I suffered these for years and they made my life a total misery, thank God for triptans!

You can buy these off the shelf now but they are expensive but rather that than live with those bloody life-ruining headaches.
