Can you recommend a book on California History?

I'm 38 years old. I've lived in CA since 1996. I spent many summers here as a teenager because my grandmother lived here then. When I asked native Californians about CA history they rarely know anything. It's odd because I had to learn the history of my home state every other year in school. Anyway... I think it's time for me to know the history of my new home state. A book by Kevin Starr gets mixed reviews on Amazon.com. Does anyone here have a favorite book (not a textbook) on CA history? Thanks!

I love "Up and Down California in 1860-1864: The Journal of William H. Brewer" - this is a primary source for anybody interested in California during the Civil War. It's a journal written by a member of the first USGS survey team in California. He details his trip to California, his arrival, and his trips all around the State.

He was in San Luis Obisbo, San Juan Bautista, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, Mount Diablo, as well as the Sierra Foothills and mountains.

There's Windrider, a book on the history of the Chinese Immigrants. It is partially fictional, but it's chalked full of information!
