    (x-5)^2 / 3 = x+3

    (x-5)^2 = 3x+9

    x^2-10x+25 = 3x+9

    x^2-13x+16 = 0

    Using quadratic formula,

    x = [13 +/- sqrt(13^2 - 4*16)]/2

    (x-5)^2/3=x+3

    (x-5)^2 = (x+3)^3

    x^2 - 10x + 25 = x^3 + 9x^2 + 27x + 27

    x^3 + 8x^2 + 37x + 2 = 0

    You need to use the binomial expansion on the first bit then it will just be a polynomial which you should be able to solve.
