Why did the female dress code change so much?

A hundred years ago it would be a disgrace to wear what many women wear today. Even 50 years ago, many dresses or skirts would be outfits for women only working in certain industries. Why, did this change to the state it is now? Just want to know your opinion. Nothing more.

It's a give and take sort of thing. There's an old saying, I think it might be from the Bible, that there is nothing new under the sun. I might not be such a huge fan of the Bible, but I agree with this adage.

Depending on which culture you look at, the dress code for both men and women varies dramatically. I assume you're talking about the norms of Western civilization, which had its roots in Christian morals, which promote modesty. Fifty and a hundred years ago, it was also perfectly normal for women to go about daily life practically naked--in tribal cultures.

I think it should also be noted that by keeping risque parts of society confined to smoky, dimly lit back rooms often leads to a much seedier underbelly of society. Think of the wealthy public figure who preaches morality, caught with his pants down in a leather harness with a gag ball. The more open and honest a society is with their sexuality, the less stigma gets attached to it, and I think it's better to appear to have a looser set of morals--realistically human--than it is to represent a pristine "Leave It To Beaver" image while hiding unknown depravities.

Their plumage are exquisite designs, ornate with most brilliant colours of iridescent glow, so much so that their sight is considered to be a treat for eyes of the lovers of beauty and its surprise. And at the top of it all, they are expert dancers, and masters of their skill, born and bread to showing off whenever there is time and opportunity. I speak about nothing else but birds. I mean Birds of Paradise, Peacocks, and a host of other birds nesting on land. In sharp comparison with their male counterparts, the hens are drab and dull looking both colour as well as in their form, and therefore quite boring to look at.

They are as if they are meant to remain insignificant in appearance in contrast to their cocks, who most easily win any fashion show that might be a jungle equivalent to Paris or Milan fashion parades. The reason however is simplistic: the males such species meant to win the attention of their females mostly by showing off and dancing, whereas, the females are fashioned for some other purpose, i.e. to be a solo judge on a what could be a admixture of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘Jungle has a Talent’ show’, where the primary purpose is to sit undetected, as camouflaged, in their ground nests for longest periods of time doing nothing but hatching their eggs and then raising the young.

Women in western need to dress for different roles they play in life. In the modern society, as it is in the developed western culture, where both men and women have to work, perhaps it is important for the women to express their femininity, their significant presence, and even power in parity with men, by the way of their dressing up, or their dress codes. I think whenever there is a persistent need there is a trend to follow, and fashion is merely the best possible expression of that trend.

A hundred years ago they were wrong about it being a disgrace...

What is a genuine "disgrace" is somebody's outdated and non-flexible attitude and inability to "roll with the changing times" and prevent thyself from being forever stuck like flies in the vaseline to an old-fashioned and intolerant way of life that didn't work then and most certainly won't work now...

    Just my opinion...

    ...and nothing more...:)

Perhaps female fashion mirrors art in that it has moved from a romantic and graceful eighteenth century Pride and Prejudice world, through the bitter conflict of two world wars, into our modern time of anxiety, shock and porn.

  • Well as time goes on, people become less and less caring towards being perfect saints or whatever. I wish everyone still believed in covering up at least their *** when they go out. haha. Some girls wear shorts that look like underwear these days!!

fashion constantly changes to keep people buying new clothes, to keep up with the Jones', to keep consumerism in motion...it changes with both genders, but more for women since "they" know that woman usually buy more clothes than men. For the men they keep changing technology ;)

Well there is a reward or a percieved award to dress that way, you obviously can get more men's attention. I guess it serves pleasure, and its not illegal. So women do it.

The freedom to compete is subjected to the notion of what freedoms expression is. Notion is an other ball of wax.
