Should federal govt have the power to say to citizens "you must buy this insurance policy for $10,000 a year"?

to have insurance coverage for a family of 3 or 4?

I mean, I can understand the right for govt to try to make things reasonable for its citizens when it comes to health care, but isnt this a bizarre, draconian and unconstitutional way of going about it?

Would it not be cleaner for example for the govt to simply raise the money to come up with those same premiums through different tax mechanisms and simply pay the premiums themselves for everyone? I think thats how other countries do it. I have not yet heard of one single country that forces its citizens to go out and buy insurance at these types of prices. I have heard of mandates, but for something reasonable....like ok every citizen who can afford it should enroll in a sort of improved medicare for all with every enrolee paying $100 a month, something reasonable like that, with the different taxing mechanisms society wide to help bring in additional revenues to fund the payouts.

I am for health care reform..in fact, I am a fierce advocate of it, but this mandate for people to pay these huge premiums to me is problematic and inefficient....for a good chunk of those premiums is still going to unnecessary middlemen who are basically diverting money that could be going to providing health care to people.

I hope the supreme court overrules this aspect of the reform which would then force our corrupt politicians to do real and serious top to bottom reform including cost reduction reform.

Update:

to me insisting that citizens pay these types of high prices to insurance companies shows that our corrupt politicians just cannot bring themselves to ever do anything that negatively impacts corporate profits. They are willing to pass a bill that they know will only do 25% of the job that needs to be done, provide benefits to the destitute not on the backs of society as a whole, but rather on the backs of middle class americans who are struggling right now as it is.

Other countries have a national health care system and a private care system so they don't have to force their citizens to buy insurance. Their taxes go to pay for the national system. The U.S. govt. cannot afford to pay for premiums for every American because the cost is prohibitive. The U.s. can only subsidize individuals to buy their own insurance from the exchange.

Medicare recipients pay only $100 a month but care costs much more than that. The government is subsidizing Medicare costs for 60-80 per cent and the patient pays the rest. A family of 4 on individual plans pays almost $1000 a month for insurance. The new bill will help pay for that.

If there were no pool of insured people, the government could not afford to help pay for these policies. That is why it requires everyone to chip in and be insured, to save the country money.

Some of the bill will need tweaking over the next 10 years. And if some provision does not work I imagine it can be challenged and revised over time.

Yes, we do pay for Medicaid but that is not only for bums on the street. It is for families, seniors and disabled people with low incomes. These same people for the most part worked all their lives and now after contributing to society, need some help themselves in their old years. That is what a humane, civilized society does, it helps and protects all its citizens. Poor people come from all walks of life.

I don't know what you mean by premiums going to middlemen who are diverting the money to where?
