Is there a difference between rice flour and glutinous rice flour?

I'm making mochi ice cream for my friend and I tomorrow, and the recipe I found calls for glutinous rice flour. My mum and I could only find regular rice flour, and the man at the store had never heard of glutinous rice flour (he said there is no gluten in rice).

I have found several different terms on the internet for rice flour, including mochiko, sweet rice flour, glutinous rice flour, and of course rice flour, but I've found nothing that states a distinction among them. When I looked up mochiko, I got each of the other names as a definition.

    You would need the glutinous rice flour to make mochi (NOT the rice flour). The term "glutinous" really refers to its glue-like quality. They're totally different from each other in the sense that the glutinous one is very sticky and the other is not. You should be able to find -both- flours in any Asian grocery store.

    Mochiko (mochi = mochi, ko = flour) is Japanese for glutinous rice flour. Sweet rice flour should be the same as well since the flour is derived from sweet rice, which is sticky. I repeat, do not buy the plain rice flour.

    Good luck with the yukimi daifuku. It's sooooo worth it in the end! Yum.

    You can find glutinous rice flour in an Asian grocery store. They are labelled as such

    there is a big difference between the two..where i come from.(malaysia).we use rice flour to make banana fritters (deep fried in rice flour batter thus giving it a crispy crunchy batter) while glutinous rice flour will give a sticky texture..u cant deep fry the batter but its normally used to make sweet desserts where u boil the cakes in boiling water..when they are cooked they will float and voila...

    rice flour is the regular rice like the Chinese use.

    Glutinous rice flour is the Japanese rice which is much stickier after being cooked. Also, referred to as sticky rice.

    glutinous rice flour is stickier. i love making mochi! check the ethnic isle at your local grocery store for mochiko. my safeway, qfc, and red apple carry them! mmm...i think i may have to go buy ingredients to make mochi ice cream tomorrow now..yummy!
