when are kids old enough to stay home alone?

My children are 14 and 13. Are they old enough to stay home??

Update:

They are very mature and they know not to answer the phone unless it is me or their Dad. And we are in constant phone contact anyways. I have been leaving them a little bit at a time, more and more each time and tell them to stay away from windows and doors. They are good kids and do what they are told.

Update 2:

They are very mature and they know not to answer the phone unless it is me or their Dad. And we are in constant phone contact anyways. I have been leaving them a little bit at a time, more and more each time and tell them to stay away from windows and doors. They are good kids and do what they are told. I would never leave them over night. Just an hour or so, their Dad is usually home but sometimes has to go do something. We both have cell phones and can get home quick if needed.

In Ma. it's 14 younger than that and they can charge you with neglect.

It kind of depends on the maturity of your children, but I would say that by age 13 or 14 that they would be old enough to stay at home by themselves for a while.

Stay home, while you're out for the evening? probably , yes. Especially if they are mature. If you have a cell, and are within 'we can race home if we need to distance" they could just call if there's an emergency.

Stay home, alone for a weekend, while you and hubby go off and have motel sex..? hmm probably not.

Age is not the most important factor. Maturity matters more. Can they handle being home alone. Do they know what to do in case of an emergency?

In most states the legal age is 10, so I would think so. Granted I don't know your children and would prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt.
