Why do Christians claim that Jesus fulfilled all the requirements for the Messiah written in the Torah?

The Bible says that he will:

A. Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28).

B. Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6).

C. Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease. As it says: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore." (Isaiah 2:4)

D. Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite humanity as one. As it says: "God will be King over all the world ― on that day, God will be One and His Name will be One" (Zechariah 14:9).

If an individual fails to fulfill even one of these conditions, then he cannot be "The Messiah."

Because no one has ever fulfilled the Bible's description of this future King, Jews still await the coming of the Messiah. All past Messianic claimants, including Jesus of Nazareth, Bar Cochba and Shabbtai Tzvi have been rejected.

Christians counter that Jesus will fulfill these in the Second Coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies outright; in the Bible no concept of a second coming exists.

The Messiah will become the greatest prophet in history, second only to Moses. (Targum - Isaiah 11:2; Maimonides - Yad Teshuva 9:2)

Prophecy can only exist in Israel when the land is inhabited by a majority of world Jewry, a situation which has not existed since 300 BCE. During the time of Ezra, when the majority of Jews refused to move from Babylon to Israel, prophecy ended upon the death of the last prophets ― Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.

Jesus was not a prophet; he appeared on the scene approximately 350 years after prophecy had ended.

According to Jewish sources, the Messiah will be born of human parents and possess normal physical attributes like other people. He will not be a demi-god, (1) nor will he possess supernatural qualities.

The Messiah must be descended on his father's side from King David (see Genesis 49:10, Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5, 33:17; Ezekiel 34:23-24). According to the Christian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin birth, he had no father ― and thus could not have possibly fulfilled the messianic requirement of being descended on his father's side from King David.

The Messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah observance. The Torah states that all mitzvot remain binding forever, and anyone coming to change the Torah is immediately identified as a false prophet. (Deut. 13:1-4)

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states that its commandments are no longer applicable. For example, John 9:14 records that Jesus made a paste in violation of Shabbat, which caused the Pharisees to say (verse 16), "He does not observe Shabbat!"

Your argument is thoughtful and well researched.

I think if Jesus were to return today and complete the prophecies in the way you mentioned, he would probably be rejected by the majority of the Christian churches.

Jesus said he did not come to break the law, but to fulfill it. He did not agree that he was breaking the sabbath. He said the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. He said it was always proper to do good on the sabbath.

At his trial, Jesus admitted that he was the Messiah (Emanuele: God With Us), but he added that we could still expect the heroic Messiah in the future, who will usher in God's peace.

Moses did not say the Messiah would submit to his authority. He said the Messiah would explain all things.

I believe Jesus was and is the Messiah. Just as the Jews failed to recognize him at his first appearance as the Suffering Messiah, Christians may fail to recognize him in his second appearance as the heroic deliverer of Israel.

Either way, it is clear from a Christian and Jewish perspective, that the current pressure to have Israel halt construction in the land God has given them, including Jerusalem, is contrary to the will of God.

The two different genealogies given for Jesus in the NT each have problems in qualifying him to be the Davidic Messiah, however that point is moot. He was never an anointed King of Israel. Now to comment on one answer and explain the reality of the concepts he refers to in an insulting manner. How arrogant to assume that Jews who have kept and studied Torah for generations don't understand our own religion, but someone else who adheres to a replacement theology does. The Talmudic scholars who have a notion of a Mosiach ben Yosef, speak of him immediately preceeding the Davidic Mosiach. In fact, Mosiach ben Yosef is to be the military leader for the Davidic Mosaich, and IF he is killed in battle, will be the first of the resurrected during the reign of the Davidic Mosiach. Does that sound like anything that has happened yet? Mosiach means anointed, so there have been many messiahs. King David was a messiah. Even a NON Jewish king in the Tanakh is called a messiah, an anointed of God, for how he preserved the Jewish people. Why someone would assume that Jews who know even a novice level of Hebrew such as myself, would not know this or grasp that, is ...well frankly, quite condascending and insulting. I believe Captain was depending on the ignorance of the largely non-Jewish audience in not knowing that his statements were utterly misleading. Rabbinic scholars debated and discussed the two Messiah concept and believed that it was not mandatory that Mosiach ben Yosef appear before the Davidic Mosiach..it will be the role of humanity and the condition of the world in the era immediately preceeding the Messianic Age that will determine it. Please read below for a scholarly article I discovered on this concept, that includes the references in Tanakh and Talmud from which it derives.

First of all, you are incorrect when you say Christians claim Jesus fulfilled all the requirements of ha Torah.

Some indeed, but many do not.

The way different folks interpret scripture varies greatly.

The main thing seems to be that his followers gained some insight that Jesus was more than just an itinerant teacher, and they began recalling his teachings as they met and worshipped in the Temple. Only later on did the theology about the Messiah catch on, and even today it is not very important to many Christians.

I would caution you that you -- as a non-christian -- do not get to tell Christians how they ought to interpret various scriptures. We have our way of reading scripture which -- surprise, surprise -- is not the same as yours. Naturally you don't need to agree with it.

    Brainwashed!

Jews do not believe that Jesus is the Moshiach (Messiah) because the following have not been fulfilled (at one time on Earth - no second chances!):

    * The Sanhedrin will be re-established (Isaiah 1:26)

    * Once he is King, leaders of other nations will look to him for guidance. (Isaiah 2:4)

    * The whole world will worship the One God of Israel (Isaiah 2:17)

    * He will be descended from King David (Isaiah 11:1) via King Solomon (1 Chron. 22:8-10)

    * The Moshiach will be a man of this world, an observant Jew with "fear of God" (Isaiah 11:2)

    * Evil and tyranny will not be able to stand before his leadership (Isaiah 11:4)

    * Knowledge of God will fill the world (Isaiah 11:9)

    * He will include and attract people from all cultures and nations (Isaiah 11:10)

    * All Israelites will be returned to their homeland (Isaiah 11:12)

    * Death will be swallowed up forever (Isaiah 25:8)

    * There will be no more hunger or illness, and death will cease (Isaiah 25:8)

    * All of the dead will rise again (Isaiah 26:19)

    * The Jewish people will experience eternal joy and gladness (Isaiah 51:11)

    * He will be a messenger of peace (Isaiah 52:7)

    * Nations will end up recognizing the wrongs they did to Israel (Isaiah 52:13-53:5)

    * The peoples of the world will turn to the Jews for spiritual guidance (Zechariah 8:23)

    * The ruined cities of Israel will be restored (Ezekiel 16:55)

    * Weapons of war will be destroyed (Ezekiel 39:9)

    * The Temple will be rebuilt (Ezekiel 40) resuming many of the suspended mitzvot

    * He will then perfect the entire world to serve God together (Zephaniah 3:9)

    * Jews will know the Torah without Study (Jeremiah 31:33)

    * He will give you all the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4)

    * He will take the barren land and make it abundant and fruitful (Isaiah 51:3, Amos 9:13-15, Ezekiel 36:29-30, Isaiah 11:6-9).

There is a Second Coming, not in the Torah but in the Prophets (Zechariah 14), where God comes to save Israel. There are many reasons why those who are Jews do not understand this, but I can say now that there will be a time when it is made clear to them. I find that there are a lot of Jews who think that God didn't need to send His Messiah to Earth twice. Yet . . . that's what He is going to do.

"Christians counter that Jesus will fulfill these in the Second Coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies outright; in the Bible no concept of a second coming exists."

No concept of a second coming? Yeah right. Not even the rabbis in the Talmud could understand the apparent contradiction between Zechariah 9:9 (the first advent) and Daniel 7:13 (the second advent). In fact, they said that one prophecy or the other would be fulfilled, but not both. The problem with that logic is that it makes one of the prophecies a false prophecy.

In the Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sanhedrin, Folio 98a, it is written,

Rabbi Aleksandri said: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi DISPUTED two verses: it is written (Dan. 7:13), "And behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven," and it is written (Zech. 9:9), "[Behold, your king comes to you], lowly, and riding upon an ***!"

אמר רבי אלכסנדרי רבי יהושע בן לוי רמי כתיב (דנייאל ז) וארו עם ענני שמיא כבר אינש אתה וכתיב (זכריה ט) עני ורוכב על חמור

If they are meritorious, [he will come] with the clouds of heaven; if they are not meritorious, [he will come] lowly and riding upon an ***.

זכו עם ענני שמיא לא זכו עני רוכב על חמור

you are right. he will have to wait on many for his return. He did fulfill the first half of his prophecy by the time of his death. And you are wrong to say there is no sign of his second coming. Between the sanctuary Eden (in heaven) and the restoration of the sanctuary the Garden of Eden Lucifer went against the Prince of Host (Isaiah). The Prince of Host is the son of the King of Host (God). Just as the son of God came between the 1st Temple and the restoration of the 1st Temple, the 2nd temple. Just as he will come again between Jerusalem and the New Jerusalem. Didn't it say in the psalms he would be rejected by his own people. You sure make that prophecy come true.

Jesus pbuh has not died yet, he is the Messiah and his prophecy is yet to be fully fulfilled, he was rejected by the Jewish Pharisees and Israel paid the price in 70 AD, the "tribe of Israel" Zionists and Talmudists, have now taken themselves as Gods and the Messiah but rest assured Allah is the best of planners and Jesus will return in the Last Days to sort everything out.

I do believe that the Jews were just doing as they were told. Obviously the Torah tells of false messiahs, and someone coming to earth claiming to be God is just overwhelming. But either way, religion has been screwed by man far past the point of no return.
