It's a pun. Or a 'play on words' if you'd prefer--

"Painless", whom the movie theme song is about, is the name of a character who wishes to commit suicide in the original 1970 film by director, Robert Altman. Painless, a dentist, is a kind and sensitive man who presumably is nicknamed for his profession either because he does not inflict pain on others or because he does--i cannot remember now which it is. He is camp dentist at 4077 MASH (which of course stands for 'Mobile Army Surgical Hospital'). He informs everyone that due to his humiliation over being afflicted with stuttering, he intends to commit suicide, and in an attempt to persuade him that he has every reason to live the surgeons all humor him, pretending to throw him a lavish 'last dinner party' (visually depicted by the brilliant Altman as an apostatizing parody of Leonardo's painting, "Last Supper" at the beginning of the film). They get Painless 'dead' drunk, lying to him that they are helping him kill himself, then put him in bed with a beautiful nurse whom they expect will have sex with him and make him wish to live again. The character Painless continued in the first two or three episodes of the TV series spin-off.

MASH is one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite TV shows from my childhood. The social critique in the form of parody, satire, and black humor, helped to shape my own values, political consciousness, anti authoritarianism, and humanism.

~It depends on a lot of different things, who is doing it, the method, etc. You hear of people being killed that have died instantly, so I suppose some suicides could be painless. Obviously, the quicker the better. If a person has decided to commit suicide, there is a reason to carry on, that person could change their mind. The saying goes, don't make a permanent decision about a temporary situation. I too think it would take courage to take your own life. "Crazy" is the word some answer's used. Not just the mentally ill take their own lives. Heaven forbid they would ever suffer from depression or anxiety and take medication, and that would classify them as "crazy."~

Lol. Well considering the fact that "Painless Pole" Waldowski was 'cured' of his desire to committ suicide just by sleeping with one of the MASH nurses . . . lol . . don't you understand SATIRE? Lol.
