my flat screen monitor shuts itself off a few seconds after i turn it on. What is going on?

i bought this monitor used from a computer fair. When i got home I hooked it up to my computer to check it out. It turns on normally, the screen lights up for about 2 or 3 seconds then shuts itself completely off. I have looked at several troubleshooting sites on the internet for help, but none seem to address this particular problem. The images on the screen and the color seemed fine (for those few seconds i can see them) and the power cord / power supply is in good condition and the right one for the monitor.

does anyone out there know what the problem might be or have any advice on how to fix?

thank you

Update:

someone said it might be a capacitor problem (i immediately thought of the de lorean in back to the future..lol)..

how do i check the backlight and can i replace it myself or is it one of those major problems that i would be better off getting another monitor?

I knew buying it used was a bad risk. I knew better. I will probably never see the guy again. If something seems to good to be true, then it usually IS! (kicking self)

The backlight is failing. LCDs do not emit any light themselves, they actually require a bright white light mounted behind them to shine through the screen. This light usually consists of one or more cold cathode tubes (like the light in a flatbed scanner or a photocopier), and over time these fail. They will turn on for a few second and then switch off, exactly as you describe. Eventually, they will not switch on at all.

Chances are the person who sold you the monitor already knew that, which means they have scammed you. If you can find them again, get your money back!
