What does Transatlanticism mean?

Its DeathCab for Cutie's album name and I was wondering if it actually had a meaning or if they just made up the word. Because when I looked it up on dictionary.com it didnt exist.

haha you looked it up. You must have been really curious lol. I'm pretty sure it's made up...

Just break it up. Transatlantic means to go across the atlantic, while "cism" would mean belief in something.

So What I think it means is he believes in something that is worth going across the Atlantic for. The song itself talks about going to find someone that he needs to be "so much closer". The whole album is about finding and losing love. Ben Gibbard and Death Cab are just smart cookies, so they get to make words and then confuse you lol

It has to with being familiar with both Britain and America, and feeling more or less equally at home in both places. The most Transatlantic person I've ever seen was Allistair Cook, who used to host Masterpiece Theatre. He was sent to America as a reporter for the Manchester Guardian and lived there for the rest of his life. He also had a weekly program on the BBC called "Letter from America." There is also a thing called a transatlantic accent. Cary Grant had the most famous of those.

The word actually refers to a long distance relationship. A great song.

That word sounds like transcendentalism which means: Any system of philosophy emphasizing the intuitive and spiritual above the empirical and material

it's like a long distance relationship, like a relationship across the atlantic ocean (hence the atlanticism)
