What to expect at an oral surgeon for tooth extraction?
I came from the dentist office today with the news that they could not save my tooth after all. I had gotten a root canal and did not get it crowned in time. As he cleared off the rest of the decay today, he discovered that where was not enough to work with for a build up and crown. So I have nothing above gum level, and the decay reached to 2 cm below bone. This is a single root tooth. I was just wondering if this would most likely be a simple or complex surgery. I've had a wisdom tooth removed, but they were able to deal with that right in the general dentist office. This is the first time I've ever had to be referrred to an oral surgeon. So any insight is welcome

You'll have discomfort after the lidocaine wears off, but during the procedure you'll just feel pressure. Without seeing the tooth, I can't say for sure, but it will most likely be a simple extraction. The oral surgeon will use an elevator to wiggle around the tooth, and may even just use that to lift the tooth out. He/she may have to section the tooth using the drill, but again, you won't feel it. Once it's sectioned, the elevator will be used to lift out each piece. It will probably take longer to numb you than to complete the actual extraction. You have nothing to worry about.

You are headed in the right direction. The surgeon will skillfully remove the remaining root structure and you will do great. Good Luck
