  • What's wrong with my cars power windows?

    I have a 4 door 98 pontiac grand prix se 3.8

I'm having an issue with my power windows. While they are being lowered or raised, they stop and I have to give it a few minutes...try again... they will lower or raise a bit more...and repeat...till they are fully opened or closed.

It's not a garaged car and our winter has been "bitterly arctic" to say it politely. It was bought from a very trusted source and has been very well maintained by both it's previous owner and myself. Yes, I know that regardless, I've acquired "mystery problems" but it was either that or walk. I've recently had the master switch on the driver side door replaced. Prior to that, and during last summer and spring it was just an issue with the driver side window. Easily remedied by not lowering it all the way. It makes no difference if I'm using the master switch or my passengers are using the passenger and rear switches to raise and lower them. Could this be happening simply due to the cold which has constantly been in the negative temps? The battery is literally still a mystery as to how old it is. It's an interstate battery, which I know is a very reliable brand, but I can't make out the dates on it. I'm planning on getting a new battery, but thankfully, my car has started like a champ in temps as low as -40 right now. Of course, any attempt to lower the windows this time of year is done only after my car is thoroughly warmed up. They all operate rather slowly, and ive lubed the window "channels." trying to avoid the extra strain caused during this lovely weather. Could it be my battery or am I looking at a full round of regulator replacements? Thanks for any help or advice!

  • Can someone please help ID a houseplant I've received leaf cuttings from?

My mom gave me some leaf cuttings from a houseplant in her collection while I was home for a visit. Unfortunately, she didn't know the name of the plant so I have no idea how to care for it. I'm pretty novice as far as houseplants go, so to add another problem I've never started a plant using leaves. I'm only familiar with stem cuttings.

First things first though, the plant the leaves came from was of a vining type. The leaves are dark green, smooth, thick, and firm with a glossy look on both sides and there is lots of vein like detail in them. The underside is lighter in color. Mom had it hanging in a north window. I don't think region matters as far as houseplants go, but just in case, the main plant is in South Dakota. And I will be attempting to not kill the leaves at my home in North Dakota.

Then may I ask how to pot leaf cuttings and how long the stems/roots should be before doing so? Thanks for any help and info. Hope the picture can be accessed and shows enough detail. I've flipped a couple over in hopes of being more help. If a better photo is needed I'll provide one asap. I haven't been to Y!A in so long that I had to get acquainted with the new Yahoo Pulse profile.

  • I need advice on houseplant lighting for winter?

At long last I finally got some houseplants for our apartment this summer. I hated the thought of not seeing the color green through another frigid cold North Dakota winter. The problem is once the cold hits, our windows become glazed in frost, blowing snow, and ice and are very drafty. Good news is, the landlord said he'll come over and caulk and insulate them next week (about 8 yrs ago). So some of my plants will be without a good amount of light to thrive. I'm thinking that a simple, easy to install florescent light strip type unit may be best as I heard they last longer, which means less 28 mile round trips on icy roads. However, I don't have a clue if I should use grow lights or just a certain watt or if it's best to get one with 1 or 2 light tubes. Mom's green thumb never rubbed off on me. Plus she's lucky to have well sealed windows and never had to move hers. So a call to her wasn't much help. Also, I googled "florescent grow lights" and the link below caught my eye. Would this (or possibly 2) be suitable for 6-8 bright light and indirect light houseplants to spend their winter under.

My most sensitive and needy plants are my family of baby trichodiadema densum (Miniature Dessert Rose) a beautiful Candy Corn Vine plant (Manettia inflata) I planted from seed my 8yr old gave me for Mothers day last year.(makes that one extra special) A currently struggling Aloe Vera plant I rescued from a neighbor. Plus a baby varigated spider plant and a baby peace lily that I'll be adopting as soon as I visit home in SD.

Let me know, and by any means, if you have a better idea, please share. As far as the drafts, I've taken the liberty of caulking and weatherstripping them as best I could, AND I'm going to be bull headed and deduct my expense from the rent this month with a note reminding them how many times I've voiced the issue. Unfortunately they are only single pane windows and the prospect of storm windows is but a dream. All I want is to be able to watch my plants bloom come springtime. Thanks so much for any help.

  • Please help me with some questions about flash drives?

We recently began using flash drives at work and then told we could only use a certain computer. This particular computer doesn't have Microsoft Word, and my many requests for it apparently falls on deaf ears going on 4 months now. So I bought a flash drive of my own to maybe remedy that problem and play around with it a bit. I found and installed portable open office for work, then decided to put some little games, a file manager, a win-zip type program, calendar program, and a media player. Boring stuff for now, but never having owned one before, i'm just having fun learning about it. However, I do have questions that Google apparently can't answer for me. If you could help me with these I would appreciate it.

I used my home computer which has Windows Vista to load my copy of Open Office, but the computers at work have Windows XP. So will there be a compatibility issue running the Open Office at work? Should I have it run in compatibility mode for XP just in case?

Another question is- When you install an app do you have to keep the original zip files on the flash drive/computer hard drive or are they necessary in order to use the programs on other computers? I''ve placed them in a separate folder on my FD for now just to tidy up at least.

Thanks for any help, it's much appreciated!!!

  • Do I have to pay fees if I sign up for a Paypal account?

My brother finally talked me into joining ebay and once I registered I discovered that you can't do much without a Paypal account. I was Always under the impression that Paypal comes with a monthly fee. I only make occasional online purchases and would rather not add the expense of a monthly fee to my list. My brother told me that you just sign up with out giving them your credit card info. I don't see how this gives you the rights to a paypal account though. Could someone please explain to me how I can sign up for Paypal without the fees and yet be able to purchase something on ebay. Thanks.

(Also, I have no idea if I'm putting this in the right category on Y!A. So please let me know if there is a more proper category for me to post this...Again, Thanks for your help)

  • What gauge speaker wire is best to extend my home stereo speakers?

I live in an upper level apartment. We were recently given a very nice entertainment center that some former renters had left behind. The only place my home stereo fits is on a shelf on the bottom of the E.C. resulting in the poor placement of it's speakers being too close to the ground. As they sit I can't listen to it at a decent level without getting complaints from down below. I need to add some speaker wire so I can place the speakers in a better location. So I went shopping for what I thought was a simple roll of speaker wire and was faced with many different gauges of the stuff. Which gauge would be best to use. Also, will extending the wire effect the sound quality. I think I may need roughly 3-4 feet per speaker. Thanks

  • Does anyone here use retractable clotheslines?

I live in an apartment with a nice sized patio (9"long x 4" wide). Our landlords do allow us to hang our clothes outside to dry. Up to now, I've used my treasured 4ft chrome drying rack. It does well, but fully loaded doesn't allow for much airflow to allow quicker drying. I miss the ability to have a clothesline, so I looked at some retract-ables that were available and came across this http://www.clotheslinesource.com/clotheslines/retr...

I would like to attach it across the top bar of the metal railing which stands 3ft from the patio floor. Last year I had a large amount of laundry that needed done and picked up a long length of clothe-line rope. I inter-weaved it very tightly across the top bars, and was able to create about 4 available lines for my use. I was thrilled to discover that everything remained elevated from the floor. However, it was a bit labor intensive to be practical for me. I've googled multiple sites hoping to get a list of available hardware for this model, and also used the "ask a question" feature on some of the sites, but no answer. I am pretty handy as far as modifying things to fit my needs, but would really like to know what's coming, so it can be put to use the instant it arrives. I would like to know if these are of good enough quality to even invest in?

    What is the included hardware?

Could these be attached to metal bars without compromising the unit? ( I'm all ready stocked with heavy duty zip ties as a guess for now). Thanks in advance for your help!!!

  • I need a PDA, but I know nothing about them.?

I recently decided to accept the fact I have Adult A.D.H.D. Though I take meds for it, I still suck at remembering things, and am in danger of losing my job because of it. I am also a mother of a child with A.D.H.D. So as you can see, I have tons to remember. My online Calendars are great, But I need mobility to be sure I'm on the ball. I use google Calendar, but it only works halfway with my phone. I also own a Creative Zen X-fi (with wireless LAN) It has a calendar you can sync to, but of course, NOT Compatible with Google Calendar.

I am looking for a PDA. Not one that is Integrated into a phone either. Any other bells n whistles are fine though. It just has to work with Windows Vista, be able to hold quite a bit of Info, in the form of multiple calendars and "to do's," easily fit in the pocket, and relatively easy to operate. Does anything come to mind with those specs...please let me know...I tried looking for one myself, but I have no idea what to even look for as far as best brands, or capacity where these are concerned. I did a google search and was faced with numerous names and models I wasn't even sure was current. Anyone know of a PDA, that would suite my needs, work with Vista while being compact and reasonably priced, thanks

  • A couple BMX bike questions?

Need some info from a BMX expert if your out there. My son is saving for a BMX bike. In the meantime he asks me questions about these bikes and I have no clue. Yesterday, he found a picture of a bike that was"just what he wanted." All I know is its a BMX type ( I think), but is it considered "freestyle" or what. Now he's got me curious too. This bike has brakes on both sides of the handlebar. I have only seen them with brake levers on the right side of the handlebar. So another question is- Why does this one have two, and wouldn't they get all tangled and prevent the handlebars from spinning during tricks. I think I need to go to BMX 101. Please check the picture out below.

  • What to expect at an oral surgeon for tooth extraction?

I came from the dentist office today with the news that they could not save my tooth after all. I had gotten a root canal and did not get it crowned in time. As he cleared off the rest of the decay today, he discovered that where was not enough to work with for a build up and crown. So I have nothing above gum level, and the decay reached to 2 cm below bone. This is a single root tooth. I was just wondering if this would most likely be a simple or complex surgery. I've had a wisdom tooth removed, but they were able to deal with that right in the general dentist office. This is the first time I've ever had to be referrred to an oral surgeon. So any insight is welcome

  • Advice needed on shoes, PLEASE HELP?

I work in health-care, in a nursing home as a C.N.A. During the week I am a bath aide. USUALLY there are strict guidelines on footwear, but since I am a bath aide and my environment is wet, I am permitted to wear crocs. Well, these shoes are great but, they offer NO support and the balls of my feet are killing me. Does anyone know of any footwear that I can try that is waterproof, somewhat attractive and has decent support. I've scoured footsmart.com, and googled waterproof shoes with little luck. Thanks in advance for any help

  • Need some names of classical music that would help in calming during a bath?

I work in a nursing home, and have many confused, anxious, and dementia patients. I would like to make a CD with calm music to be put in the bath house during their baths. I know Mozart is good and bach and others of the like but I have no idea what specific songs are more for calming, as i don't really listen to this type of music. Does any one know any specific "pieces" that I can try. Thanks!!!

  • Can my dentist still save my tooth?

I recently had a root canal done and a metal post was put in place and sealed with some den-temp material. I made an appointment for the next step which i am guessing is the impression and further prepping for my porcelain crown. In the last couple of days, ive noticed that pieces of my remaining tooth are continuing to break off. So I'm thinking I need to call my dentist monday to see if my next appointment can be moved up due to what seems to me as a large amount of tooth loss. I have an appointment for may 14th and don't think I'll have any workable tooth left by that time. So should i call or does the implanted core prep me for other options. The dentist told me it was to reinforce the crown when it it put in place.

  • Am I being over protective if i drive or accompany my 6 yr old to and from School?

his dads car had an issue yesterday and was unable to take our son to school, so he called me at work and I came to pick him up to take him instead. When I got back to work 15 minutes later i was laughed at by all my co workers because we don't make him walk the 5 blocks to school by him self. We live in a great neighborhood, but his dad and i both feel he doesn't pay close enough attention to his surroundings at this time. So, what do you think? Are we being over protective?

  • Can a sewing machine be easily adapted for use by a left hander? 29 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer.?

I feel stupid asking this, but I am a left hander. Very few items are made with this in mind. I would like to buy one but if using it proves to be as awkward as cutting with a knife, I'd rather not risk crooked stitchings.

  • Do you need a Wii or PS2 to play guitar hero?

Our 6 yr old son got a guitar game that plugs into the TV and he is quite good at it. We were thinking about getting him a basic guitar hero for his birthday in a few months. But we don't own a Wii or PS2. Is there a version that you can plug into the tv?

  • What would you do if this happened to you?

I work in a nursing home as a CNA. We recently got a new CNA Coordinator who has previously worked on the floor as a receptionist. She is still in training for her new position as Coordinator, and is performing some duties as such on her own.

I had an issue with one of my fellow CNA's that needed dealt with, and went to the new Coordinator with my issue. Later in the day i found out from another CNA, that she had taken my issue and gave a "heads up" warning to the CNA I was having problems with. The CNA that told me about this particular encounter, asked that I not say anything about me knowing the CNA was warned unofficially. But I feel my privacy was breached and feel that this CNA Coordinator should be turned in for it. Should I ask the CNA that had heard the conversation to consider it, or should i take it opon myself to do so.
