A couple BMX bike questions?
Need some info from a BMX expert if your out there. My son is saving for a BMX bike. In the meantime he asks me questions about these bikes and I have no clue. Yesterday, he found a picture of a bike that was"just what he wanted." All I know is its a BMX type ( I think), but is it considered "freestyle" or what. Now he's got me curious too. This bike has brakes on both sides of the handlebar. I have only seen them with brake levers on the right side of the handlebar. So another question is- Why does this one have two, and wouldn't they get all tangled and prevent the handlebars from spinning during tricks. I think I need to go to BMX 101. Please check the picture out below.

First of all, if you need to get the 'basics' on BMX bikes. You can google some websites. There you should be able to find the info you need. Also, there are racing and freestyle bikes (and other types as well, but not sure). But the bike youre looking at is most likely a freestyle. They usually come with brakes on both sides (front and rear wheel). That is because its used to do tricks and stunts that require the rider to have control over braking the front and/or back tires. You can also check out Youtube for tutorials on BMX tricks. Yeah, I know, I doubt you want to start trying them, but it will help you understand why there are different bikes and different styles, as well as how the tricks are performed. Its actually pretty entertaining... like circus tricks...LOL Good luck.

Honestly,i was looking to buy a bike too a really good one. so i did some research a BMX bike is for people who do lots of stunts, you need to know how old he is and why he needs it, if he just wants to ride it for a while like ride to the park and back a bmx not a good choice, a regular bike for $100- $200 is a lot better. a mountain bike is if he is riding long distances like for miles and stuff
same thing with a road bike long distances, a hybrid is between a road and a mountain bike, so with this one which i think is suitable for him is good if he rides fast i know i do so i am getting an Italian racing bike. so basically a hybrid is good for a person in any age, a mountain bike is better for adults and teens same with the road bikes. hybrids are fast, fun, they also look good, and they aren't that expensive, so bmx i wouldn't recommend it, seriously.=)

If your son wants to race then that bike is way wrong. The brake lever on the left is a front brake and the one on the right is a rear brake. If your son wants to start racing trying looking at "podium intense" bikes or anything close to that. Look on ebay.
