Can a sewing machine be easily adapted for use by a left hander? 29 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer.?
I feel stupid asking this, but I am a left hander. Very few items are made with this in mind. I would like to buy one but if using it proves to be as awkward as cutting with a knife, I'd rather not risk crooked stitchings.

Don't worry, sewing will be no problem as the sewing machine is a left handed machine! The left hand does all the guiding work. Both Elias Howe and Issac Singer, the inventors of the modern machine, were lefties. They used their less dominant right hand to crank the machine and the left hand would do the fine dexterous work. To this day much of the real "handy" work on the machine is done by the left hand. Enjoy!

No problem... your left hand is actually doing the major "steering" work of sewing, while the right hand controls the flow of fabric. The stitch controls are on the right, but I assume you can turn a knob or punch in a number with your right hand -- it's not nearly as difficult as dialing the old style dial telephones left-handed.
You might want to call around to sewing machine dealers to see if you can find someone who is a leftie, and then make an appointment to try out machines with them.
You will need true left-handed shears for cutting, so you can sight the cutting line properly OR you'll need a rotary cutter and mat. Martelli makes a nice ergonomic rotary cutter in a left hand version.

You can use the sewing machine as is.
It is neither right handed, nor left handed oriented.
