References are people who you know and who are willing to RECOMMEND you to the employer.

The employer does not want you to list your mom, dad, aunts, uncles or cousins because these people are likely to say the very best things about you, regardless of whether it is true or not, that is why the employer says to list references that "are not related to you."

When you list a reference include the persons first and last name as well as their phone number and e-mail address, and their mailing address if the application asks for it.

Make sure you contact the person you are going to list as your reference beforehand to ask them if it is ok to list them, as your prospective employer may contact them to hear their recommendation for you.

    A List Of References

It means the employer wants references that are not from friends and family. A teacher or coach will do if you have no work experience. If you did volunteer work, that will do, too.

    Best of luck!
