Where did all the good punk go?
more to the point where did punk go? We are told we still have it in the shape of Blink 182 and Green Day, but come on! That's not punk! We seem to be told it is so people can go round saying they are all hardcore because they like Green Day. Imagine a face off between the Sex Pistols and Green Day. Refused seem to be the last real great punk band and the only (British at least) proper hardcore punk band at the moment is Gallows, who I think are an excellent band. Does anyone know any other good punk bands? Or is the only other 'punk' we have actually bubblegum pop.

Turbonegro is the only newer band that can be called punk that I really like. All of the others that I know have been around for 30 years or are just copying the old bands. Plus a lot of their songs are absolutely hilarious and they are an incredible live band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTKCXoOmV78
There are lots of decent underground bands that play in the hardcore style of the 80s, you just have to look for them. Personally, while some of those bands are good I don't see much point in listening to facsimiles when I can just listen to the original bands that they're copying.
Why does it have to be new? I'll bet there is a lot of great old punk that you haven't heard.
Try these:
Chron Gen (one of my favorites)
Les Thugs
Blitz
Eater
The Gonads
The Bomb Party
Menace
The Boys
New Model Army
Cortinas

Well, if you're asking whether or not there are any really good, original punk bands who formed recently, the answer is "I don't know".
However, lots of punk's elder statesmen are still at it. The Pistols reformed for a brief tour a few years ago, and former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra (whom I've seen in concert twice now: once with the Melvins, and 6 days ago in Brooklyn with the Guantanamo School of Medicine) is still going strong. Similarly, although Iggy and the Stooges are more "proto-punk" than punk, they continue to tour, and the two times I saw them rank among the very best concerts I've ever attended.
To anyone tempted to dismiss these acts as "old": based on what I've seen, the average 25-year old musician doesn't even come close to having the energy, stamina, and ability to deliver an unforgettable live performance that Iggy Pop does.

Greenday kicks ***, man. But, yes I agree with you. Punk nowadays is considered that stupid bubblegum pop sh*t that rich kid's pay people to produce for them. If you're looking for good punk, you gotta go underground. It's still around, the good sh*t just isn't famous anymore because the youth of today isn't interested in anything that won't get them friends and a cool reputation. Check out your local punk music scene, it's still thriving I'm sure. The Northwest has a great punk scene going on that isn't about the image. It's about being loud, fast, and smashing the system.(:

With our take on punk, Rancid is still around, but a lot of their older fans didn't seem to like the new album (I didn't mind it). Was a travesty they opened for Rise Against last year, but that's another story.
I'd check out Gang Green, old Boston punk/hardcore band, I think they're good.

Hmm i listen to mainly old stuff like Dead Kennedys, Toy Dolls and The Ramones, Misfits are another one of my favourites, but theres the odd few that are around now that are ok.
The Casualties are pretty cool there classed as like street punk, i like Rancid even though i didnt like the last album much, and i think Bad Religion are still around.
Theres NOFX but iv always put them in the "poppy" type catorgry with Green Day.. pretty much everything else around now sounds like pop music though, and its getting worse..

there are alot of hardcore punk bands out there but almost all of them are unsigned because of the lack of popularity of the genre. find some local punk bands

I was thinking that. However, Blink 182 are a guilty pleasure of mine haha.

It's all underground, where it came from originally.
