If you itemize, you can claim EITHER state and local income taxes, or sales taxes. Gas tax isn't a sales tax so you can't deduct that. If you choose sales tax, remember it's only the TAX that you deduct, not the cost of the items you buy. The IRS has a table you can use instead if you choose sales tax, so you don't have to have all your receipts and add up those pennies.

If you don't itemize, no you can't deduct taxes paid.

    1) You can only claim sales tax if you itemize deductions not if you take the standard deduction.

    2) You can only claim EITHER sales tax OR income tax.

    3) For most people in a state like MA with an income tax, they will usually (but not always) be better off claiming income tax not sales tax.

    4) Sales tax must be "sales tax" not special taxes like federal gasoline taxes.

    5) If you are claiming sales tax, you can either save all your receipts and claim an actual amount or use an IRS chart that estimates sales tax paid based on your income.

If you itemize your deductions anyway, then you can deduct either your actual income taxes, or your sales taxes (but not both for some reason).

If you choose the sales tax option, you can either use the IRS table to determine a "standard" amount, or you can deduct your actual sales tax paid. If you elect to deduct your actual sales tax, you need to have records to prove your claim in case you get audited.

Generally, the sales tax deduction is only for sales tax. It does not include gas taxes that are built into the posted price per gallon, its only for sales tax that shows up as an additional line item on a receipt.

if you have every receipt with every tax that you paid and that will total more than the table amount that is worked out on most tax programs you can certainly claim it since you can verify it

Of course not. You can only claim that for big ticket items like cars and boats.
