even shade tolerant grasses needs 5-6 hours of sun...may need to go with a ground cover like Asian jasmine....English ivy.. etc

You obviously have had grass growing there before so replanting shouldn't be to big of a problem. Shade seed will give you the best results.

    To plant:

    1. Rake any debris away and loosen up the first 2" - 3" of dirt with a garden rake.

    2. Buy a seed starter and mix with seed. You can find the ratios you need on the package of the starter.

    3. Spread evenly by using a spreader or, if not available, by shaking a cup or bucket lightly

    4. Water lightly. Keep the ground moist for the next few weeks.

    5. Don't walk on the ground till the grass sprouts and begins to thicken.

    **** Luck!

You can get grass seed that is specially blended to grow in shade -- called "Shade Mix" or some similar name. Before you plant the grass, you need to 'rough up' the soil. After planting, water it twice per day. If you don't get grass growing there in 2-3 weeks, then the area is too shady to grow grass. You might try some sort of ivy under the tree or a groundcover that thrives in low light. Ask at a nursery/garden supply store.

You can probably grow grass there if there was grass growing before the kids played on it. Good luck!

Very few grasses will grow under heavy shade just not enough sunlight.

grass needs plenty of light so I think planting new grass is a waste of time, have you thought of trying artificial grass ?
