Old Canon BJC 2100 printer connected to my Vista laptop. Won't print..HELP!!?

I didn't want to buy a new printer, so I bought a paralell adapter with USB...The Vista found and installed the printer and new adapter cable. It printed a few pages, faded and blury, I assumed it was the ink kind of dried up. So I kept printing. Now, it tells me I have the wrong ink cartridge in my printer, which I do not. Can anyone please HELP me figure this out. Do I need to change some settings to the printer or something else? This is the first printer to be installed on my Vista laptop. Thanks in advance.

Update:

Thank you........I did do a cleaning and it did not help...I think the problem is more complex...any more suggestions PLEASE?! Thank you!

before you spend a penny, examine to ascertain that there are drivers on your version of abode windows. My wager isn't any, for the reason it truly is an exceedingly previous printer. And no cable adapter will help. If no longer, your only decision is to purchase a clean printer. Welcome to the excellent international of abode windows.
