Should I collect unemployment?

I am now 19 years of age.

I got fired from my most recent job (also my first job) on March 19. I was there since July 1, 2008; since I was 17.

Couple of days after I got fired, I applied for unemployment and found out that I will be receiving $133 a week.

It takes three weeks to get the first benefit but a week and a half down the road after applying; I got a job offer at Staples. I was wondering since I am not full time and maybe will end up getting paid around $150 a week; should I work or just collect unemployment for the next 6 months?

What would you do if you were in my situation? College $133 for free from unemployment or work for $150?

I live with my parents who pay for my expenses so I think I can manage with $133 a week.

Update:

Reply to some answers; I don't know how it works in other states but here in NYC I know at least 50 people who were fired from their jobs and received unemployment.

The only things that would make you ineligible is sexual harassment, voluntary termination of your job, etc...

But getting fired for a legit reason definitely doesn't unqualify unemployment.

First, you cannot continue to collect unemployment if you turn down a bona fide job offer. Further, you will likely be able to get unemployment even if you work this part-time job. Your benefit is reduced according to the rules in your state. In CA, for instance, you would still get about $20 a week unemployment while earning $150 a week.

I wouldn't collect the unemployment since you already found a new job. Say something happens down the road and you absolutely need the unemployment money, you might not be able to get any if you have already collected it in the past.

If you got fired for cause and not laid off you can bet that the employer is going to appeal the decision and get it reversed so you may end up with no benefits at all.

Also, if the unemployment office finds that you refused work they can also terminate benefits.

I mourn for the future of this country.

You should always work - it betters your resume, it betters your chances at a real career and it expands your network.

Of that 133/week you are going to have to pay taxes. Be sure to set some aside.

Your parents must be thrilled that their hard work and efforts with you managed to create someone who lives still off their dime, and opts to get "free" money rather than work.

I was in the same situation and chose to work. It is easier to get another job when you have one and can show you are willing to work rather than sit around and do nothing. Once you have the job at Stables you might be able to get more hours and make a lot more than UC.

take the job. What happens when U/E runs out? Or if your employer who fired you decides to contest the award.

If you are offered a job and don't take it while receiving unemployment, your benefits could be canceled.

since when can you collect unemployment when you live with your parents? arent you still considered a dependent then? and if you live with your parents arent you still in school? and finally if all that was true and legal you can work part-time and still collect benefits they just reduce it. id call and talk to them. but i don't think youll be allowed to anyway.

Just so you know, getting fired doesn't make you eligible for unemployment. They could fight it and you will have to pay back every cent....
