What What are the limitations of "built-in" TNC's on amateur radios?

I'm considering the purchase of a Kenwood TS 2000 or Icom 746/746PRO (suggestions for similar radios welcome-please tell why). I am a bit confused about how capable the built-in TNC is on these radios. Will I need an external TNC for MARS(olivia, pactor)? If I do, can I use my laptop with soundcard software instead?

the built in TNC is AX.25 only.

Pactor will still require a pactor controller.

Soundcard modes (olivia, PSK31, RTTY, etc) still need a sound card and a computer
